(Introduction & Summary)

What is the..................................................................in the water ! (Page 46)

TEXTUAL QUESTIONS

Thinking about the Poem

In pairs, attempt the following questions.

Q. 1. Why does the poet say, “I would not intrude on him”? Why doesn’t he offer him money to buy another ball?

Ans: The poet would not intrude on the boy because he (the boy) is busy in understanding how to tolerate the loss of the ball.

The poet doesn't offer the boy money to buy another ball because it is worthless. The boy has ‘attachment’ with the lost ball. So the ‘attachment’ is important, not the ball.

Q. 2. “..........staring down/All his young days into the harbour where/His ball went.......”

Do you think the boy has had the ball for a long time? Is it linked to the memories of days when he played with it?

Ans: Yes, I think the boy has had the ball for a long time. The line—“all his young days into the harbour” suggests this.

Yes, it is linked to the memories of the days when he played with it. The above cited line proves it.

Q. 3. What does ‘in the world of possessions’ mean?

Ans: It means that in this world every human has unending desires for owning worldly objects. This is a materialistic world. Here people value their materialistic possessions more than anything else.

Q. 4. Do you think the boy has lost anything earlier? Pick out the words that suggest the answer.

Ans: No, I don’t think the boy has lost anything earlier. It was the first occasion he had lost something. The line—‘He senses the first responsibility’ suggests this.

Q. 5. What does the poet say the boy is learning from the loss of the ball? Try to explain this in your own words. (Board Model Paper, 2025-26; Sec. Board Exam., 2024)

Ans: The poet says that the boy is learning a lesson from the loss of the ball because loss in life is inevitable and without learning the art of bearing the loss, the life becomes hellish.

Q. 6. Have you ever lost something you liked very much? Write a paragraph describing how you felt then, and saying whether—and how—you got over your loss.

Ans. How I Got Over My Loss

Once I bought a pair of rainbow coloured shoes. It was an eye-catching pair. From sole to lace it had violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red colours. The outer designs were glamorous. Its interiors were soft and comfortable. I felt as if I were walking in the sky. But one day, when I went to the temple, I took them off in a corner and went inside. When I came back, I found them missing. I was awfully grieved. But then, I thought that every object in this world has an age. In life, we humans possess and lose things. I consoled myself. Thus, I got over my loss.
