किन्तु वल्लि के लिए, मुख्य दरवाजे के पास खड़ा होना प्रत्येक क्षण इतना आनन्ददायक था जितना कि परिष्कृत विस्तृत खेलों में से कोई भी, जो दूसरे बच्चे खेलते थे। गली की सड़क पर ध्यानपूर्वक देखते रहने से उसे अनेक नए असाधारण अनुभव दिए।

उन सभी में से सर्वाधिक आकर्षक चीज वह बस थी जो उसके गाँव व नजदीकतम कस्बे के बीच चलती थी। यह उसकी गली के बीच से प्रत्येक घण्टे गुजरती थी, एक बार कस्बे तक जाते हुए और एक बार वापस आते हुए। प्रत्येक बार यात्रियों के एक नए समूह से भरी बस का दृश्य वल्लि के लिए आनन्द का एक असमाप्य (कभी खत्म न होने वाला) स्रोत था।

बहुत से दिनों व महीनों से भी अधिक वल्लि उसके पड़ोसियों व उन लोगों के बीच के वार्ताओं को सावधानी से सुनती थी जो बस का नियमित प्रयोग करते थे, और वह यहाँ-वहाँ (बीच-बीच में) कुछ विवेकशील प्रश्न भी पूछ लेती थी। इस तरीके से उसने बस यात्रा के बारे में विविध संक्षिप्त ब्यौरा एकत्रित कर लिया था। कस्बा उसके गाँव से 6 मील था। एक तरफ का किराया 30 पैसे था—‘‘जो कि लगभग कुछ भी नहीं था,’’ उसने एक सजे-धजे व्यक्ति को यह कहते सुना था, किन्तु वल्लि के लिए, जिसने एक महीने से दूसरे तक उतना पैसा बमुश्किल देखा हो (अर्थात् नहीं देखा हो), यह (30 पैसे) एक बड़ी धन-राशि प्रतीत हुई थी। कस्बे तक की संक्षिप्त यात्रा में 45 मिनट लगते थे। कस्बे पहुँच कर यदि वह अपनी सीट पर ही रुकी रहे और दूसरे/अतिरिक्त 30 पैसे का भुगतान कर दे, तो वह उस ही बस से घर लौट सकती थी। इसका अर्थ था कि वह एक बजे वाली अपराह्न की बस पकड़ सकती थी, 1.45 पर कस्बे पहुँच सकती थी, और लगभग 2.45 के आस-पास वापस घर हो सकती थी।

उसके विचार चलते गए जैसे-जैसे वह हिसाब लगाती रही और (फिर) पुनः हिसाब लगाती रही, योजना बनाती गई और (फिर) पुनः योजना बनाती गई।

हिन्दी अनुवाद—खैर, वसंत के एक सुहाने दिन जब अपराह्न वाली बस गाँव को छोड़कर मुख्य राजमार्ग पर मुड़ने ही वाली थी कि एक छोटी-सी (बालिका की) आवाज को चिल्लाते हुए सुना गया : ‘‘बस रोको! बस रोको!’’ और एक छोटा-सा हाथ आदेशात्मक रूप से उठा।

बस धीमी होकर रेंगने लगी, और कंडक्टर, अपना सिर दरवाजे से बाहर निकालते हुए बोला, "जल्दी करो! जो कोई भी हो, कह दो, जल्दी से आ जाए।"

"मैं ही तो हूँ!" वल्लि चिल्लाई। "मैं ही वह हूँ जिसे चढ़ना है।"

अब तक बस ठहर चुकी थी, और कंडक्टर ने कहा, "ओह, वास्तव में! तुमने ऐसा नहीं बताया!"

वल्लि ने अपनी आँखों से प्रत्येक चीज का भक्षण/अवलोकन किया। किन्तु जब उसने बाहर देखना आरम्भ किया, तो उसने अपनी नजर को तिरपाल के एक पर्दे से कटा हुआ पाया जिसने उसकी खिड़की का निचला भाग ढका हुआ था। इसलिए वह सीट पर खड़ी हो गई और पर्दे के ऊपर से झाँकने लगी।

बस अब एक नहर के किनारे के साथ-साथ जा रही थी। सड़क बहुत सकड़ी थी। एक तरफ नहर थी और, इससे परे, ताड़ के वृक्ष, घास का मैदान, दूरस्थ पर्वत, और नीला, नीला आकाश था। दूसरी तरफ एक गहरी खाई थी और फिर एकड़ के एकड़ हरे खेत—हरे, हरे, हरे इतनी दूरी तक जितनी आँखें देख सकती थीं।

ओह! यह सब कितना आश्चर्यजनक था!

अचानक उसे एक आवाज द्वारा चकित कर दिया गया। "सुनो बच्ची", उस आवाज ने कहा, "तुम्हें ऐसे खड़ा नहीं होना चाहिए। नीचे बैठ जाओ।"

“मैं याद रखूँगा” कंडक्टर ने कहा, उसके स्वर की नकल करते हुए। सभी हँसने लगे और धीरे-धीरे (फिर) वल्लि भी हँसी में शामिल हो गई।

कंडक्टर ने एक टिकट में छेद किया और इसे उसे सौंप दिया। “केवल पीछे बैठ जाओ और अपने को सहज/आरामदायक कर लो। आपको खड़ा क्यों रहना चाहिए जब आपने एक सीट के लिए भुगतान किया है?”

“क्योंकि मैं (ऐसा) चाहती हूँ”, उसने जवाब दिया, पुनः खड़े हुए।

“लेकिन यदि तुम सीट पर खड़ी रहोगी, तो तुम गिर सकती हो और स्वयं को घायल कर सकती हो जब बस तेजी से मुड़ेगी या एक खुरदरी जगह से टकराएगी। इसीलिए हम चाहते हैं कि तुम नीचे बैठ जाओ, बच्ची।”

“मैं बच्ची नहीं हूँ, मैं आपको बता देती हूँ”, उसने रोष से कहा, “मैं आठ वर्ष की हूँ।”

“हाँ, मैं अकेले ही यात्रा कर रही हूँ” उसने रूखेपन से उत्तर दिया, “और मैंने एक टिकट भी लिया है।”

“हाँ, वह अपने कस्बे के रास्ते में है (अर्थात् कस्बे तक जा रही है)”, कंडक्टर ने कहा। “30 पैसे के टिकट के साथ।”

“ओह! आप अपने काम से काम क्यों नहीं रखते हैं” वल्लि ने कहा। किन्तु वह फिर भी हँस पड़ी और कंडक्टर भी हँसने लगा।

किन्तु वह वृद्ध महिला अपनी बकबक जारी रखती है। “क्या इतनी छोटी बच्ची के लिए अकेले यात्रा करना उचित है? क्या तुम्हें ठीक से पता है कि कस्बे में तुम कहाँ जा रही हो? गली क्या है (अर्थात् कौनसी गली में)? घर का नम्बर क्या है?”

“आपको मेरे बारे में चिन्ता करने की आवश्यकता नहीं है। मैं मेरी स्वयं की देखभाल कर सकती हूँ”, वल्लि ने कहा, अपना चेहरा खिड़की की ओर घुमाते हुए व बाहर की ओर एकटक देखते हुए।

हिन्दी अनुवाद—उसकी पहली यात्रा—कितनी सावधानीपूर्वक, श्रमसाध्य, विस्तृत योजनाएँ उसने इसे कराने (पूरा करने) के लिए बनाई थीं! जो भी छुटपुट सिक्के उसके पास आए उसने मितव्ययिता से बचाया था, पेपरमिन्ट्स, खिलौनों, गुब्बारों और ऐसे ही अन्य चीजें खरीदने के प्रत्येक प्रलोभन को दबा कर, और अन्त में उसने कुछ 60 पैसे बचा लिये थे। यह कितना कठिन रहा था, विशेषकर उस दिन ग्राम मेले में, किन्तु उसने झूले पर झूलने की तीव्र इच्छा को भी दृढ़ता से दबा दिया था यद्यपि उसके पास पैसे थे।

जब वह पर्याप्त पैसा बचा चुकी थी, उसकी अगली समस्या थी कि माँ की जानकारी के बिना वह घर से बाहर कैसे खिसके। लेकिन उसने बिना अधिक कठिनाई के इसकी व्यवस्था कर ली। प्रतिदिन लंच के पश्चात् उसकी माँ लगभग 1 से 4 बजे या कुछ ऐसे ही एक झपकी लेती थी। वल्लि इन घण्टों का प्रयोग अपनी यात्राओं के लिए करती थी जैसे कि अपने द्वार मार्ग से बाहर देखते हुए खड़ी रहती या कभी-कभी यहाँ तक कि गाँव के अन्दर सावधानी से व साहसपूर्वक चली जाती; आज, ये वही घण्टे गाँव से बाहर की अपनी प्रथम यात्रा के लिए प्रयुक्त कर सकती थी।

बस चलती गई, अब एक खाली भू-दृश्य की सीमा से बाहर जाते हुए, अब एक छोटी ढाणी के बीच से दौड़ती हुई या सड़क के बगल की एक अजीब-सी दुकान के पास से दौड़ती हुई। कभी ऐसा लगता था कि बस सामने से आने वाली दूसरी गाड़ी को या पैदल चलने वाले का भक्षण कर जायेगी अर्थात् उनके ऊपर चढ़ जायेगी। किन्तु देखो! सभी बाधाओं को पीछे छोड़ती हुई यह किसी तरह से आराम से गुजर गई। वृक्ष उनकी ओर दौड़ते प्रतीत होते जैसे ही बस उन तक पहुँच जाती तो वे रुक जाते और फिर सड़क की बगल में साधारण रूप से कुछ क्षण के लिए असहाय खड़े हो जाते तथा फिर दूसरी दिशा में दौड़ जाते।

अचानक वल्लि ने प्रसन्नता से अपने हाथों से ताली बजाई। एक जवान गाय, पूँछ हवा में ऊँची करके, बस के ठीक सामने, सड़क के ठीक बीच-बीच, बहुत तेजी से दौड़ रही थी। बस धीमी होकर रेंगने लगी और ड्राइवर तेजी से बार-बार हॉर्न बजाने लगा। किन्तु जितना अधिक वह हॉर्न बजाता वह जानवर (गाय) उतना ही अधिक भयभीत हो जाता और यह सरपट दौड़ने लगता—लगातार ठीक बस के सामने।

हिन्दी अनुवाद—कैसे भी यह वल्लि के लिए बहुत विनोदपूर्ण था। वह हँसती गई और हँसती गई जब तक कि उसकी आँखों में आँसू नहीं आ गये थे।

‘‘ऐ, बहनजी, क्या आप पर्याप्त हँस ली हैं?’’ कंडक्टर ने पुकारा, ‘‘अच्छा होगा कि कुछ कल के लिए भी बचाकर रख लो।’’

अन्त में गाय सड़क से बाहर हट गई। और शीघ्र ही बस एक रेलरोड क्रॉसिंग (रेल फाटक) पर आ गई। दूर से रेलगाड़ी को एक बिन्दु के जैसे देखा जा सकता था, जो इसके नजदीक आते जाने से बड़ी व बड़ी होती जा रही थी। फिर यह फाटक के गेट के पास से अत्यधिक शोरगुल व खड़खड़ाहट के साथ, बस को हिलाती हुई, तेजी से निकल गई। फिर बस आगे बढ़ी और रेलवे स्टेशन को पार किया। वहाँ से इसने एक व्यस्त, सुव्यवस्थित कारोबारी गली को पार किया और, घूमते हुए, एक अधिक चौड़ी व्यस्त सार्वजनिक सड़क पर प्रवेश किया। इतनी बड़ी, चमकदार दिखने वाली दुकानें! वस्त्रों व अन्य व्यापारिक वस्तुओं का कितना जगमगाता प्रदर्शन! इतनी भारी भीड़!

विस्मय से मूक होकर वल्लि मुँह खोले प्रत्येक चीज को एकटक देखती रहती।

फिर बस रुकी और वल्लि के अतिरिक्त प्रत्येक उतर गया।

‘‘ऐ बहनजी’’ कंडक्टर ने कहा, ‘‘क्या आप उतरने के लिए तैयार नहीं हैं? यह इतनी दूर है जितनी दूर तुम्हारे 30 पैसे तुम्हें ला सकते हैं।’’

‘‘नहीं’’, वल्लि ने कहा, ‘‘मैं इस ही बस से लौट रही हूँ।’’ उसने अपनी जेब से 30 पैसे और लिये और सिक्कों को कंडक्टर को सौंप दिया।

‘‘क्यों, कुछ और मामला है?’’

‘‘नहीं, कोई बात नहीं है। मैंने केवल बस की सवारी करने जैसा महसूस किया (अर्थात् मैं बस की सवारी करना चाहती थी), बस यह बात है।’’

‘‘अब जबकि तुम यहाँ हो, क्या तुम दृश्यों पर एक नजर डालना नहीं चाहती?’’

‘‘बिल्कुल अकेले? ओह, मैं अत्यधिक भयभीत हो जाऊँगी।’’

‘‘नहीं, कोई भी मेरी तलाश नहीं कर रहा होगा’’, उसने कहा।

बस चली, और पुनः वही आश्चर्यजनक दृश्य आए।

वल्लि जरा भी नीरस नहीं थी और प्रत्येक चीज का उस ही उत्तेजना से अभिवादन किया जो उसने पहली बार महसूस की थी। किन्तु अचानक उसने छोटी गाय को सड़क की बगल में मरे पड़े देखा, ठीक वहाँ जहाँ इसे किसी तेज चलने वाले वाहन द्वारा टक्कर मारी गई थी।

‘‘क्या यह वही गाय नहीं है जो हमारी बस के कस्बे की यात्रा पर उसके सामने दौड़ी थी?’’ उसने कंडक्टर से पूछा।

कंडक्टर ने हाँ में सिर हिलाया और वह दुःख से भर गई। थोड़ी देर पहले तक वह कितना प्रिय, सुन्दर

प्राणी थी और अब अचानक अपना आकर्षण, और अपना जीवन खो चुकी थी और कितनी भयानक दिख रही थी, कितनी डरावनी, वहाँ पड़े हुए, टाँगें फैली हुई, इसकी जीवन रहित आँखें थमी हुई, चारों तरफ रक्त…………।

बस आगे बढ़ी। मृतक गाय की स्मृति उसके दिमाग में बार-बार आ रही थी जिससे उसका उत्साह ठंडा हो रहा था। वह अब खिड़की से बाहर और अधिक नहीं देखना चाहती थी।

वह हंसी और बस से नीचे कूद गई। फिर वह आगे चली गई, घर के लिए सीधे दौड़ लगाती हुई।

जब उसने अपने घर में प्रवेश किया उसने अपनी माँ को जागा हुआ और वल्लि की मौसियों/चाचियों में से एक जो ‘दक्षिणी गली’ में रहती थी, से बात करते हुए पाया। यह मौसी/चाची वास्तव में एक बातूनी थी, एक बार बात करना आरम्भ कर दे तो फिर अपना मुँह बन्द ही नहीं करती थी।

‘‘और तुम कहाँ रहीं?’’ जब वल्लि अन्दर आई तो उसकी मौसी/चाची ने कहा। वह, एक उत्तर की आशा किये बिना, एक साधारण तरीके से बोली। इसलिए वल्लि केवल मुस्कराई, और उसकी माँ व मौसी/चाची ने अपनी बातचीत जारी रखी।

At last the cow moved off the road. And soon the bus came to a railroad crossing. A speck of a train could be seen in the distance, growing bigger and bigger as it drew near. Then it rushed past the crossing gate with a tremendous roar and rattle, shaking the bus. Then the bus went on and passed the train station. From there it traversed a busy, well-laid-out shopping street and, turning, entered a wider thoroughfare. Such big, bright-looking shops! What glittering displays of clothes and other merchandise! Such big crowds!

Struck dumb with wonder, Valli gaped at everything.

Then the bus stopped and everyone got off except Valli.

"Hey, lady," said the conductor, "aren't you ready to get off? This is as far as your thirty paise takes you."

“No,” Valli said, “I’m going back on this same bus.” She took another thirty paise from her pocket and handed the coins to the conductor.

What had been a lovable, beautiful creature just a little while ago had now suddenly lost its charm and its life and looked so horrible, so frightening as it lay there, legs spread-eagled, a fixed stare in its lifeless eyes, blood all over...

The bus moved on. The memory of the dead cow haunted her, dampening her enthusiasm. She no longer wanted to look out the window.

She sat thus, glued to her seat, until the bus reached her village at three forty.
