A Russian Wedding ( एक रूसी विवाह )

Do you know..................................................................................................partying.

‘The Proposal’..................................................................perhaps continues!

Natalya : He’s dead..........................Champagne! Champagne! (Page 134)

TEXTUAL QUESTIONS

Thinking about the Play

--- | ---

(ii) Then think of five adjectives or adjectival expressions of your own to describe each character in the play.

Ans. (1) Lomov—Weak hearted bachelor, nervous, short-tempered, quarrelsome, rigid.

(2) Natalya—Excellent house-keeper, good looking, well-educated, sharp tongued, short-tempered, rigid, touchy and sensitive.

(3) Chubukov—Old, quarrelsome, uses funny abusive language (turnip ghost, stuffed sausage), concerned father.

(iii) Can you now imagine what these characters will quarrel about next? (Sec. Board Exam., 2023)

Ans. All the characters seem to have a short temper and thus are expected to get into a quarrel even on the pittiest issues. I can try to imagine that these characters will quarrel next about the quality of champagne.

Thinking about Language

I. 1. *This play has been translated into English from the Russian original. Are there any expressions or ways of speaking that strike you as more Russian than English? For example, would an adult man be addressed by an older man as my darling or my treasure in an English play?

Read through the play carefully, and find expressions that you think are not used in contemporary English, and contrast these with idiomatic modern English expressions that also occur in the play.

(b) Mamta said that she had gone to visit her grandma the previous week.

वाक्य (b) में 'Mamta said' एक Reporting Clause है जिसमें Reporting Verb, 'said' है। Clause—'that she had gone to visit her grandma the previous week'—Reported Clause है।

"Why do you want to know my age? If people know I am so old. I won't get work!" laughs 90-year-old A.K. Hangal, one of Hindi cinema's most famous character actors. For his age, he is rather energetic. "What's the secret?" we ask. "My intake of everything is in small quantities. And I walk a lot," he replies. "I joined the industry when people retire. I was in my 40s. So I don't miss being called a star. I am still respected and given work, when actors of my age are living in poverty and without work. I don't have any complaints," he says, adding, "but yes, I have always been underpaid." Recipient of the Padma Bhushan, Hangal never hankered after money or materialistic gains. He embraces and kisses Lomov and rushes to fetch Natalya to accept the proposal.

He gets excited very early. Instead of directly proposing to Natalya, he gets distracted by petty arguments over land and dogs. His weak health and indecisiveness make him appear unsure and lacking confidence.

Third, Chubukov asks, ‘What is it, my beauty?’ His ability to assess the situation and respond according to it shows that he is very clever.

However, his excitement soon turned into frustration when Lomov and Natalya began arguing over petty issues, leading to a chaotic and comical situation instead of a smooth proposal.

प्रथम, वे How do you do द्वारा एक-दूसरे का अभिवादन करते हैं।

Q. 11. What is Lomov’s claim about the Oxen Meadows? (Board Model Paper, 2025-26)

Or

What does Lomov say about the Oxen Meadows? (Question Bank)

Ans. Lomov claims that Oxen Meadows belong to his aunt’s grandmother. She gave the free use of these Meadows in perpetuity to the peasants of Natalya’s father’s grandfather, in return for which they were to make bricks for her. They used those Meadows for 40 years and thought those were theirs. He insists the land legally remains his. He argues based on long-standing possession and family inheritance.

Q. 12. Highlight Natalya’s arguments for the claim of Oxen Meadows.

Ans. Natalya argues that her grandfather and great grandfather reckoned that their land extended to Burnt Marsh, which means Oxen Meadows were theirs. They had the land for nearly three hundred years. They only come to five dessiatins and are worth

perhaps 300 Roubles. She dismisses Lomov’s claim. She calls his argument baseless and insists that the land is rightfully hers.

Q. 13. Why does Natalya say that Lomov’s behaviour wasn’t at all neighbourly?

Ans. First, Lomov claims their land to be his own. Second, he shouts hoarsely in Natalya’s house. Third, he warns to assault the mowers if she sends them there. Fourth, he shows ungratefulness to the help extended by the Chubukovs. His insistence and heated arguments frustrate her. They make her see Lomov as a quarrelsome and unreasonable neighbour rather than a friendly one.

Q. 14. Write down the affectionate and abhorrent terms used for Lomov by Chubukov.

Ans. Chubukov affectionately addressed Lomov as “my dear fellow, my darling, my treasure, my beauty” etc. Chubukov abhorrently addressed Lomov as pettifogger, malicious, double faced intriguer, villain, scarecrow, blind hen, turnip ghost, stuffed sausage, wizen-faced frump etc. His tone shifts based on his mood, from welcoming to furious during their arguments. He uses both affectionate and abhorrent terms for Lomov throughout the play.

Q. 15. Why does Chubukov goes to bring Lomov back?

Ans. When Chubukov’s daughter learns that Lomov came here to propose to her for marriage, she pressurises her father to bring Lomov back. She wails and yells. Being a father of a grown up daughter, it was his duty to accept the marriage proposal consented by his daughter. Chubukov wants to secure the match and calm his daughter, so he rushes to bring Lomov back despite their earlier heated argument.

Q. 16. Why did Lomov want to marry Natalya immediately?

(Question Bank)

Ans. Lomov wanted to marry Natalya immediately because he was concerned about his health and feared he might die soon, leaving her without a proposal. He suffered from health issues like palpitations and nervousness, so he thought marriage would provide stability and comfort in his life. His urgency also stemmed from his desire to secure the marriage before any further complications arose.

Q. 17. What does Chubukov tell Lomov about the Oxen Meadows?

(Question Bank)

Ans. Chubukov tells Lomov that the Oxen Meadows, which Lomov claims to own, actually belong to Chubukov’s family. He asserts that the land has always been in his family’s possession and criticizes Lomov for falsely asserting ownership of it. When the argument escalates, he insults Lomov and calls him a “pettifogger”. He refuses to acknowledge his so called proofs of ownership.

Q. 18. What do you know about Guess?

Ans. Guess is a dog of Lomov. He bought it from Meronov for 125 Roubles. It is a first-rate dog. He is pure bred, firm on feet and has well-sprung ribs. It is a good hunter. It ran neck to neck with the Count’s dog. Though Lomov admits that the dog has become weak due to old age.

Q. 19. What do you know about Squeezer?

Ans. Squeezer is a dog of the Chubukov. It is a thorough bred animal. It is a young dog. On points and pedegree, it is better than anything. It is the son of Harness and Chisels. It was bought for 85 Roubles. Chubukov and Natalya consider squeezer

superior to Lomov’s dog, Guess. However, Lomov argues that squeezer is overshot and not a good hunter.

Q. 20. What, according to the Chubukovs, are the defects in Guess?

Ans. Guess, according to the Chubukovs, is old and as ugly as a worn out cab-horse. Its pedegree is not known. It is short in the muzzle. It is silly. Its buying cost is more than squeezer. It has gone lame now. They also argue that he is undershot. It means his lower jaw is shorter than the upper one, which affects his ability as a hunting dog.

Q. 21. What, according to Lomov, are the defects in Squeezer?

Ans. According to Lomov, Squeezer is an overshot—a bad hunter. Its lower jaw is shorter than the upper jaw. Its running is slower than Guess. One day, when other dogs were running after a fox, Squeezer went and started worrying a sheep. He also argues that squeezer is too young, overspeedy, and lacks proper hunting instincts. He insists that his dog, Guess, is far superior despite being old.

Q. 22. How do Chubukov and Natalya tease Lomov during concluding time?

Ans. Lomov is mocked by Natalya and Chubukov for his palpitations and inability to endure long hunting trips. Natalya sarcastically suggests that instead of going for hunting in the jungle, he should search for “black beetles in the kitchen oven”. They ridicule his poor health, making fun of his weakness and nervousness during their heated arguments.

Q. 23. How do Chubukov and Lomov blame each other in the concluding scene?

Ans: Lomov blames that Chubukov is an intriguer. Everybody knows that his late wife used to beat him. He is not a good hunter.

Chubukov blames that Lomov is under the slipper of his house-keeper. He calls Lomov to be a boy, a pup, a milkshop and a fool. He warns Lomov to be shut up or he will be shot dead.

Q. 24. What is the ending of the play ‘The Proposal’? (Sec. Board Exam., 2024)

Or

How does the play The Proposal conclude? (Board Model Paper, 2023-24)

Ans: The play The Proposal concludes at a happy note. The quarrelling young persons—Lomov and Nataliya catch each other’s hands and kiss too. They fulfil the customs of marriage. Chubukov also feels happy and relieved after putting Lomov’s hand into his daughter. But, they still keep arguing over whose dog is better. Chubukov suggests that all of them should have champagne to celebrate.

Q. 25. Write the character-sketch of Lomov. (Sec. Board Exam., 2026)

Ans: Lomov is a bachelor of 35 years. He is wealthy and neighbour of the Chubukovs. He lacks in confidence and communicative competence. He is a fault-finder. He suffers from superiority complex. He is quarrelsome and valetudinarian. He comes to propose to Natalya but gets caught in petty disputes over Oxen Meadows and their dogs. Despite his constant bickering, he is desperate to marry for stability. It makes him both comical and pitiable.

Q. 26. Write the character-sketch of Nataliya. (Sec. Board Exam., 2025, 2023; Board Model Paper, 2025-26, 2024-25)

Or

Write about the character, which you like most in the play.

(Board Model Paper, 2022-23)

Ans. Nataliya is an unmarried girl of 25 years. She is the daughter of Chubukov. She is the neighbour of the Lomovs. She covertly loves Lomov. She is quarrelsome and envious. She suffers from superiority complex. She wails and yells in adversity. Despite these, she marries Lomov. Her character humorously reflects the themes of pride, marriage and social expectations.

Q. 27. Write the character-sketch of Chubukov.

Ans. Chubukov is the father of Nataliya, the heroine of the story. He is the neighbour of the Lomovs. He is wealthy but envious. He suffers from superiority complex. He is quarrelsome. He is sensible. He gets his daughter married with Lomov. His character adds humor to the play and highlights the absurdities of social status and marriage.

Q. 28. Discuss about the aptness of the title ‘The Proposal’.

Ans. The title ‘The Proposal’ is apt as the play revolves around Lomov’s intention to propose to Natalya. However, instead of a smooth proposal, petty arguments over land and dogs dominate their interactions which turns the event into a comic fiasco. Despite conflicts, the marriage is ultimately agreed upon, making the title ironic yet appropriate. It highlights the play’s humor and central theme.

Q. 29. What do you learn from the play ‘The Proposal’?

Ans. We learn how we should behave at the time of a marriage proposal. We

comprehend that human disqualities of envy, superiority, bad-mouthing, quarrel etc. should be kept under control. That anger deflates the aim, is profusely evident. Time to understand each other should be given. It teaches the value of patience and understanding. It also underlines the need to prioritize relationships over ego.

Q. 30. Compare and contrast the natures of the protagonist and the heroine of the play ‘The Proposal’.

Ans. Both the protagonist and the heroine are arrogant and egoist. Both have pride in their being wealthy. Both suffer from human disqualities.

Lomov displays the lack of communicative competence whereas Nataliya’s expression is curt and clear. Lomov suffers from diseases while Nataliya is fit and fine. Both characters are obsessed with material possessions and engage in petty disputes, yet they ultimately conform to societal expectations, agreeing to marry despite their differences.

Q. 31. What is the reason behind the quarrelling of Natalya and Lomov?

(Board Model Paper, 2024-25)

Ans. Natalya and Lomov quarrel over two main reasons. Lomov claims that the Oxen Meadows belong to his family, while Natalya claims that her family has been using the land for their cattle for as long. They also argue over which of their dogs, Squeezer and Guess, is superior. It shows how trivial matters overshadow Lomov’s actual purpose-proposing marriage to Natalya.

Q. 32. How did the Chubukovs prove themselves as good neighbour to Lomov?

(Board Model Paper, 2023-24)

Or

What do you know about the neighbourly relation of the Lomovs and the Chubukovs?

Ans. The Chubukovs pretend to be good neighbours but are actually quarrelsome and opportunistic. Initially, Chubukov warmly welcomes Lomov, but they soon argue over land and dogs. Despite conflicts, Chubukov ultimately encourages the marriage between Lomov and Natalya, prioritizing social and financial benefits. Their relationship with Lomov is marked by disputes, yet they maintain neighbourly ties for personal gain.

Q. 33. Highlight the dramatic features of the play ‘The Proposal’.

Ans. The play has cast, playwright, protagonist, conflict, soliloquy, tragic flaw, prologue, epilogue, flashback etc. It is a comic play. It ends at a happy note. It has an apt and suggestive title. It has a good plot. It gives messages. The satirical portrayal of marriage as a social contract, rather than a romantic bond, enhances the play’s theatrical impact.

Q. 34. What was Chubukov’s opinion about Lomov?

Ans. Chubukov called Lomov petti fogger, a malicious, double faced, intriguer, rascal, villain, scarecrow, monster, blind hen, turnip ghost, stuffed sausage and wizen-faced frump. Despite insulting him, Chubukov ultimately supported the proposal. This reveals his opportunistic nature and eagerness to get his daughter married.

Q. 35. Why did Natalya call Lomov a demon of contradiction?

Ans. Natalya said that on that day Lomov was a demon of contradiction. He first contradicted the ownership of the Oxen Meadows and then said that his dog, ‘guess’ was better than her dog ‘squeezer’. His inconsistent opinions frustrated Natalya, Leading her to call him contradictory. His constant bickering showed his stubborn and argumentative nature.

Q. 36. How did Lomov and Natalya get married?

Ans. Lomov and Natalya got married after much arguing. When Natalya learned that Lomov had come to propose her, she became eager to accept him. Chubukov hurriedly brought Lomov back despite his weak health. Even then, they continued to argue. Finally, Chubukov quickly announced their marriage despite their quarrels.

Q. 37. How can we say that Natalya was in love with Lomov?

Ans. Natalya tells her father that oxen meadows are of Lomov. She calls him back. She also asks her father to call a doctor when Lomov falls unconscious. The sudden change in her behaviour showed that she cared for Lomov and wanted to marry him. Despite their frequent quarrels, her eagerness to accept his proposal proved her hidden feelings for him.

Just think, I felt greedy and had a whole field cut, and now I’m not at all pleased about it because I’m afraid my hay may rot. I ought to have waited a bit. But what’s this? Why, you’re in evening dress! Well, I never! Are you going to a ball or what? Though I must say you look better... Tell me, why are you got up like that?

There’s nothing to argue about. You see my aunt’s grandmother gave the free use of these Meadows in perpetuity to the peasants of your father’s grandfather, in return for which they were to make bricks for her. The peasants belonging to your father’s grandfather had the free use of the Meadows for forty years, and had got into the habit of regarding them as their own, when it happened that...

NATALYA : No, it isn’t at all like that! Both grandfather and great-grandfather reckoned that their land extended to Burnt Marsh — which means that Oxen Meadows were ours. I don’t see what there is to argue about. It’s simply silly!

LOMOV : I’ll show you the documents, Natalya Stepanovna!

NATALYA : No, you’re simply joking, or making fun of me. What a surprise! We’ve had the land for nearly three hundred years, and then we’re suddenly told that it isn’t ours! Ivan Vassilevitch, I can hardly believe my own ears. These Meadows aren’t worth much to me. They only come to five dessiatins, and are worth perhaps 300 roubles, but I can’t stand unfairness. LOMOV : Natalya Stepanovna, I don’t want the Meadows, but I am acting on principle. If you like, I’ll make you a present of them.

NATALYA : I can make you a present of them myself, because they’re mine! Your behaviour, Ivan Vassilevitch, is strange, to say the least! Up to this we have always thought of you as a good neighbour, a friend; last year we lent you our threshing-machine, although on that account we had to put off our own threshing till November, but you behave to us as if we were gypsies. Giving me my own land, indeed! No, really, that’s not at all neighbourly! In my opinion, it’s even impudent, if you want to know.

LOMOV : Then you make out that I’m a landgrabber? Madam, never in my life have I grabbed anybody else’s land and I shan’t allow anybody to accuse me of having done so. [Quickly steps to the carafe and drinks more water] Oxen Meadows are mine!

CHUBUKOV : Excuse me, my precious. You forget just this, that the peasants didn’t pay your grandmother and all that, because the Meadows were in dispute, and so on. And now everybody knows that they’re ours. It means that you haven’t seen the plan.

LOMOV : I’ll prove to you that they’re mine!

CHUBUKOV : You won’t prove it, my darling—

CHUBUKOV : You Lomovs have had lunacy in your family, all of you!

LOMOV : Yes. He’s all right at following, of course, but if you want to get hold of anything...

NATALYA : In the first place, our Squeezer is a thoroughbred animal, the son of Harness and Chisels while there’s no getting at the pedigree of your dog at all. He’s old and as ugly as a worn-out cab-horse.

LOMOV : He is old, but I wouldn’t take five Squeezers for him. Why, how can you? Guess is a dog; as for Squeezer, well, it’s too funny to argue. Anybody you like has a dog as good as Squeezer... you may find them under every bush almost. Twenty-five roubles would be a handsome price to pay for him.

NATALYA : There’s some demon of contradiction in you today, Ivan Vassilevitch. First you pretend that the Meadows are yours; now, that Guess is better than Squeezer. I don’t like people who don’t say what they mean, because you know perfectly well that Squeezer is a hundred times better than your silly Guess. Why do you want to say he isn’t?
