सूरज के पिता एक नोटबुक में जल्दी-जल्दी लिख रहे थे, अपने हिसाब-किताब कर रहे थे। सूरज खुली खिड़की के पास बैठा अँधेरे की ओर टकटकी लगाए देख रहा था। उसके पिता दिल्ली एक व्यावसायिक यात्रा पर जा रहे थे और उन्होंने सूरज को भी साथ ले जाने का निश्चय किया था।
(“मुझे नहीं पता वह ज़्यादातर समय कहाँ चला जाता है,” उन्होंने शिकायत की थी। “मुझे लगता है अब उसे मेरे काम के बारे में कुछ सीखना चाहिए।”)
नाइट मेल ट्रेन सैकड़ों यात्रियों को लेकर जंगल के बीच से तेज़ी से गुजर रही थी। डिब्बों के पहिए पटरियों पर एक स्थिर लय में बज रहे थे। छोटे-छोटे टिमटिमाते हुए प्रकाश आते-जाते दिखाई दे रहे थे, जब ट्रेन जंगल के किनारे बसे छोटे गाँवों के पास से गुज़र रही थी।
सूरज ने ट्रेन की गड़गड़ाहट सुनी, जब वह एक छोटे पुल के ऊपर से गुज़री। कटिंग के पास बनी झोंपड़ी दिखाई नहीं दे रही थी, लेकिन उसे पता था कि वे सुरंग के पास पहुँच रहे हैं। उसने रात के अँधेरे में आँखें गड़ा दीं; और तभी, जैसे ही इंजन ने तीखी सीटी दी, सूरज ने दीपक देख लिया।
वह सुंदर सिंह को देख नहीं सका, लेकिन उसने दीपक देख लिया और जान गया कि उसका मित्र वहीं बाहर मौजूद है।
टरेन सुरंग में गई और फिर बाहर निकल आई ; उसने जंगल को पीछे छोड़ दिया और अनंत मैदानों में गरजती हुई आगे बढ़ गई।
सूरज अँधेरे की ओर देखता रहा, जंगल की उस अकेली कटिंग और दीपक वाले चौकीदार के बारे में सोचते हुए-जो हज़ारों यात्रियों के लिए हमेशा एक जुगनू की तरह बना रहेगा, क्योंकि वह भाप के इंजनों और तेंदुओं के लिए अँधेरे को रोशन करता रहता है।
