Question 1.
Ramesh, an 11 year old boy, developed a few pimples on his face. His mother told him that this is because of ongoing biological changes in his body.
(i) What could be the possible reasons for the development of these pimples on his face?
Answer:

  1. Acne or pimples are a common physical change in adolescence and main reasons for this are:
  2. Hormonal change : Androgen hormone increases in this age, which activates the oil glands (sebacious glands).
  3. Additional oil production : These glands form more oil on skin.
  4. Closed pores : Extra oil and dead cells blocked skin pores, which causes generation of bacteria and results in swelling, redness and acne.

(ii) What can he do to get some relief from these pimples?
Answer:

  1. Remedies for relief : Ramesh can do these remedies
  2. Cleaning of skin : Wash his face 2-3 times in day with face wash or mild soap.
  3. Avoid oily products : Don’t use heavy cream or oil on face.
  4. Do not squeeze pimples : It can cause infection and mark on face.
  5. Balanced diet : Reduce oily and spicy food, eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
  6. Consult a doctor : If pimples are in serious condition, then consult a dermatologist.

Which of the following food groups would be a better option for adolescents and why?

Answer:
The food group given in option (ii) is comparatively good for adolescents because this includes grains, pulses, leafy vegetables, dairy products, salads etc. The nutrients present in these food is helpful in growth and development. Protein is more needed in this age for physical growth and development of muscles. Protein helps to repair body, and formation of hormone and enzymes.

No, Shalu is not right completely because there are many changes in adolescence along with physical changes. So I would like to change or add that:

  1. Mental changes : Development of thinking power, development of analytical thinking.
  2. Emotional changes : Ups and downs in mental state (mood swings) increased sensitivity.
  3. Social change : Change in relation with friends, understanding their role in society.
  4. Biological changes : Secretion of hormone, menstruation in girls, sperm formation in boys.

During a discussion in the class, some of the students raised the following points. What questions would you ask them to check the correctness of these points?
(i) Adolescents do not need to worry about behavioural changes.
(ii) If someone tries a harmful substance once, they can stop anytime they want.

Adolescents sometimes experience mood swings. On some days, they feel very energetic and happy, while on other days, they may feel low. What other behavioural changes are associated with this age?
Answer:
The behavioural changes in adolescents are:

  1. Being self centred: Overthinking about the physical changes and their appearance.
  2. Willing to become independent: Distance with parents and willing to take decision on their own basis.
  3. Peer pressure: Affected by friends to do good or bad deeds.
  4. Nature of daring: Attempting to do new and dangerous things.
  5. Intensity of emotions: Very happy or very sad on something.

Question 7.
While using a toilet, Mohini noticed that used sanitary pads were scattered near the bin. She got upset and shared her feelings with her friends. They discussed the importance of menstrual hygiene and healthy sanitary habits. What menstrual hygiene and sanitary habits would you suggest to your friends?

The suggestions are:

  1. Proper disposal of used pad: Wrap it in newspaper or other paper and throw in dustbin, not an open place.
  2. Change it in a regular period: Pad should be changed within 4-6 hours to prevent infection.
  3. Hygiene: Pay special attention on cleaning of hands and genital organs.
  4. Selection of right product: Always use a good quality sanitary napkins or menstrual cups.
  5. Speak without hesitation: Discuss on this topic with family and teachers to get rid of wrong assumptions.
  6. Spread awareness: Inspire others to dispose in a right way.

Question 8.
Mary and Manoj were classmates and good friends. On turning 11, Mary developed a little bulge on the front of her neck. She visited the doctor who gave her medication and asked to take iodine-rich diet. Similarly, a bump was developed on the front of Manoj’s neck when he turned 12. However, the doctor told him that it was a part of growing up. According to you, what could be the possible reason for advising Mary and Manoj differently?
Answer:
The possible reason for this is physical changes during adolescence.

  1. Case of Manoj: The bulge appeared on Manoj’s neck was a common sign of development of voice- box (Adam’s Apple), which is a sexual characteristic in boys in adolescence. It is a natural change, so doctor ensured him.
  2. Mary’s Case: Whereas bulge in neck of mary is may be a sign of hyperthyroidism, in which main reason is lack of iodine. So, doctor advised her to take iodised salt and medicines

Answer:
The main reason behind these changes is chemicals named ‘hormones’ secreted by different glands. These are released in response to signals from brain on an appropriate time and controls growth and development.
