1. THE ROAD NOT TAKEN [
—Robert Frost
Two roads .................................undergrowth.
Then took ........................................ the same.
And both ........................................ come back.
I shall ........................................ the difference.
I. Q. 1. Where does the traveller find himself? What problem does the face?
Ans. The traveller finds himself in a yellow wood from where the two roads diverged.
He faces the problem of decision-making. He is supposed to choose the road for travelling further.
Q. 2. Discuss what these phrases mean to you :
(i) a yellow wood
(ii) it was grassy and wanted wear
(iii) the passing there
(iv) leaves no step had trodden black
(v) how way leads on to way
Ans. (i) A yellow wood means that the poet saw a wood in autumn season. The leaves of the trees had turned yellow.
(ii) The other road was not used so much as the first one so there was abundant grass on it. This road needed to be used so that the grass might wear out.
(iii) The passing there means' walking on the road.
(iv) 'Leaves no step had trodden black means that the leaves hadn't turned black as they weren't trampled by any human foot.
(v) How way leads on to way means that one path carries us to the other.
Q. 3. Is there any difference between the two roads as the poet describes them :
(i) in stanzas two and three?
(ii) in the last two lines of the poem?
Ans. (i) In stanzas two and three, the poet finds no difference between the two roads. The poet in the second stanza says that the other road is also just as fair. In the third stanza that poet says that both the roads lay equally that morning.
(ii) In the last two lines the poet says that he took the less travelled road which made all the difference.
Q. 4. What do you think the last two lines of the poem mean? (Looking back, does the poet regret his choice or accept it?)
Ans. The last two lines of the poem mean that he took the road less travelled by and it made all the difference in his life.
Looking back, the poet seems to be regretting his choice. He missed the opportunity standing then and there. He postponed it for another

day. He thinks perhaps his life would have been happier if he had taken the road more travelled by.
II. Q. 1. Have you ever had to make a difficult choice (or do you think you will have difficult choices to make)? How will you make the choice (for what reasons)?
Ans. Yes, I once had to make a difficult choice (or I think I'll have difficult choices to make.) I'll make the choice for the following reasons :
First, I'll weigh on the merits and demerits. Then, I'll consult with my family, friends and guides.
Q. 2. After you have made a choice do you always think about what might have been, or do you accept the reality?
Ans. After I have made a choice I always think about what might have been. I accpet the reality but I make amend on the basis of my own experience in the matter. And then make the realistic or practical choice and ensure success.
I. Answer the following questions in about 20-30 words each :
Q. 1. Highlight the message of the poem.
Ans. The poem gives the message of utilization of opportunity and of accepting challenges. The poet did not utilise the opportunity of treading the road more travelled by. But he accepted the untrodden path as a challenge.
Q. 2. What sort of road seemed the first one? Why was it so?
Ans. The first road seemed easier and more trodden because more people had walked on it. It is a common human nature to go after the easier way and avoid difficulties.
II. Answer the following questions in about 80 words each :
Q. 1. Discuss the title of the poem, “The Road Not Taken”. Is it appropriate for the poem?
"The Road Not Taken"
Ans. The poet walks on an autumnal forest path. He comes to a fork where the road diverges into two paths that go in different directions. He wants to travel on the path that is less travelled by. He leaves the first path for another day and takes the other one for further travel. Later on, he finds that life is so complex and tangled that a choice once made cannot be reversed. He regrets his choice. He wishes he had made a different choice. The title is appropriate as it talks about the poet's wish for the path the didn't and now cannot choose.
