Wind
Q. 2. Bring out the symbolism in the poem "The Road Not Taken".
Ans. The poem is about something more than a choice of paths in a wood. We can interpret the poet's choice of a road as a symbol for any choice in life between alternatives that appear almost equally attractive. It is only after passage of years that we can really evaluate the decisions and choices that we make based on the result of these choices. If we find success the choice is the right one, but if we find failure, then obviously the choice has been a wrong one.

TEXTUAL QUESTIONS
Thinking About The Poem :
I. Q. 1. What are the things the wind does in the first stanza?
Ans. The wind blows strongly and causes a lot of destruction. He breaks the shutters of the windows, scatters the papers and throws down the books on the shelf. He brings the rain too.
Q. 2. Have you seen anybody winnow grain at home or in a paddy field? What is the word in your language for winnowing? What do people use for winnowing? (Give the words in your language, if you know them.)
Ans. Yes, I have seen people winnowing grain in a paddy field. In my Hindi language the word for winnowing is—पछाड़ना/ओसाना/फटकना. For winnowing people use winnowing-basket (छाज).
Q. 3. What does the poet say the wind god winnows?
Ans. The poet says the wind god winnows weaklings, frail crumbling houses, crumbling doors, crumbling rafters, crumbling wood, crumbling bodies, crumbling lives and crumbling hearts. Thus, the wind god winnows the weak and the crumbling.
Q. 4. What should we do to make friends with the wind?
Ans. To make friends with the wind we should build strong homes; join the doors firmly; practice to firm the body; and make the heart steadfast. Thus, we should make ourselves strong and firm.
Q. 5. What do the last four lines of the poem mean to you?
Ans. The last four lines of the poem mean to me that the wind blows out (deadens) weak-fires (weak people). The wind god strengthens the strong (strong people). Thus, the wind god helps those who make themselves strong and he destroys those who keep themselves weak.
Q. 6. How does the poet speak to the wind—in anger or with humour? You must also have seen or heard of the wind 'crumbling lives'. What is your response to this? Is it like the poet's?
Ans. The poet speaks to the wind both in anger and with humour. In anger, the wind breaks shutters, scatters papers, throws down books, tears pages, brings rain etc. The poet speaks with humour when wind pokes fun at weaklings. I have seen and heard of the wind 'crumbling lives'. Storms, cyclones etc. cause devastation and lives then crumble.
My response to this is positive. Nature balances itself by such measures. It's God's fury against unsustainable development.
Yes, it is like the poet's. The poet also advocates for friendship with wind (nature).

Ans. The poet is a great lover of mankind. He talks of a violent wind that destroys men and their houses, doors, windows, crops and every thing they make. Wind is a brute force of nature.
It destroys weak human beings and their weak creations, but it does not cause any damage to strong people and their strong things. The poet shows us the way how we can meet the challenge of the wind. He suggests to us to build strong bodies and strong hearts and strong homes. Then wind will be harmless to us.
