8. A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal

— William Wordsworth

Stanza 1. A slumber ............... earthly years.

Stanza 2. No motion ............... trees.

TEXTUAL QUESTIONS

Thinking About The Poem :

Q. 1. 'A slumber did my spirit seal', says the poet. That is, a deep sleep "closed off" his soul (or mind). How does the poet react to his loved one's death? Does he feel bitter grief? Or does he feel a great peace?

Ans. The poet reacts by saying that he has no human fears because a slumber has sealed his spirit. She seems a thing that cannot feel the touch of earthly years. Before slumber he may have been in grief but after slumber he doesn't appear so. He appears to feel a great peace; first, he falls asleep and second, he mentions earth's diurnal course (means routine life).

Q. 2. The passing of time will no longer affect her, says the poet. Which lines of the poem say this?

Ans. The following lines say that passing of time will no longer affect her:

She seemed a thing that could not feel
The touch of earthly years.

Q. 3. How does the poet imagine her to be, after death? Does he think of her as a person living in a very happy state (a 'heaven')? Or does he see her now as a part of Nature? In which lines of the poem do you find your answer?

Ans. The poet thinks that she is now a part of Nature.

The following lines express this idea :
Rolled round in earth’s diurnal course
With rocks and stones and trees.

[ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS]

I. Answer the following questions in about 20-30 words each :

Q. 1. Write a short note on the message/theme/central idea of the poem.

Ans. The message/theme/central idea is that we can draw comforts from nature even when we have lost our loved one. After death, our loved ones become the part of nature which remains in action round the clock.

Q. 2. Wordsworth is a poet of nature. Substantiate.

Ans. The poet says that his loved one is now beyond earthly years. Only nature is eternal. He says that she rolls with earth's diurnal course. He mentions rocks, stones and trees.

II. Answer the following questions in about 80 words each :

Q. 1. Write a note on the theme of the peom, “A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal”.

“A Slumber Did My Spirit Seal”

Ans. Wordsworth was in love with Lucy, a young girl. He was so mesmerised by her physical and spiritual beauty that he thought nothing would change about her. She would not be affected by the ravages of old age and death. The poet was blind to the hard facts of life. However, he was proved wrong. One fine day, Lucy stopped making any movement. She was, infact, dead. The poet draws consolation in the fact that she is now a part of nature.

Q. 2. How does the poet reveal that Lucy is dead without using the words ‘death’ or ‘dead’?

Ans. Though the poet does not use the words ‘death’ or ‘dead’ for Lucy, yet he is able to convey very clearly that Lucy is no longer alive. He writes that Lucy has lost all force and strength; she has become absolutely inert and motionless. Her body has lost all activity. The young girl has lost her senses of hearing and seeing. He says that her body has integrated itself with the earth. She is now become one with stones, rocks or trees.
