2. The house was ................................... then wearing.

4. I went ................................... sound from above.

42
5. I took .......................................... noise from above.

7. I don't ................................................................ the flesh.
8. I felt ................................................................ I do?

12. "What was................................................ own beauty!"

Ans. The doctor heard a familiar sound. He thought it was the sound of the rats. He heard it three times (from the above beam). Sounds stopped when he sat in the chair. Sounds stopped because the snake had reached the ground.

Ans. While he was looking into the mirror, the doctor made an 'important' decision to shave daily and grow a thin moustache to look more handsome. He made another 'earth shaking' decision to always keep an attractive smile on his face to look more handsome.

Ans. When the doctor looks into the mirror he smiles because he thinks he is an attractive bachelor and doctor. The next time he smiles at himself because he feels he is a poor, foolish and stupid doctor. His vanity changes into humility.

(ii) The doctor has ordinary looks but he wants to be more handsome by daily shave, thin moustache and an attractive smile.

Thus, this story about a frightening incident presents contrasts humorously.

IV. Reported questions
Report these questions using if/whether or why/when/where/how/which/what. Remember the italicised verbs change into the past tense.
- Meena asked her friend, "Do you think your teacher will come today?"
- David asked his colleague, "Where will you go this summer?"
- He asked the little boy, "Why are you studying English?"
- She asked me, "When are we going to leave?"

- David asked his colleague where he would go that summer.
- He asked the little boy why he was studying English.
- She asked me when we were going to leave.
- Pran asked me whether I had finished reading the newspaper.
Writing :
- Try to rewrite the story without its humour, merely as a frightening incident. What details or parts of the story would you leave out?
Ans. It was a hot summer night; about ten o'clock. The homeopath was in his unelectrified rented room. Thoughts were crowding his mind. Then, he resumed his seat on the chair near the table with a mirror. Suddenly there came a dull thud. And a fat snake slithered along his shoulder and coiled around his left arm above the elbow. Its hood was three or four inches away from his face.
reading the newspaper.
6. Seema asked her how long she had lived there.
7. Sheila asked the children whether they were ready to do the work.
Using some of the expressions given above in exercise III, talk about an incident when you were very scared. You may have a competition to decide whose story was the most frightening.
Ans. My name is Radha. One afternoon, I went to the river Yamuna to fill the pitcher. There I heard a boatman playing his flute very sweetly. I got so lost in listening to the flute that I lost track of time. I started for home. I felt something was following me. I was scared out of my wits (very frightened). I was too scared to move. I stood there holding my breath.
around his left arm above the elbow. Its hood was three or four inches away from his face. He was turned to stone but his mind was active. He didn't do any foolish thing. He prayed to God. And God listened to his prayer. Suddenly the snake saw its reflection into he mirror. It uncoiled itself, slithered into his lap and crept on to the mirror table.
Now, the homeopath was suddenly a man of flesh and blood. Holding his breath, he quietly got up, went out into the verandah, leapt into the yard and ran to a friend's house.
I would like to leave out the details or parts entail humour. For example, his sharing of unelectrified rented room with rats, his 'important' and 'earth-shaking' decisions, contrasts in vanity and humility.
- Read the description given alongside this sketch from a photograph in a newspaper (Times of India, 4 September, 1999). Make
out of my wits (very frightened). I was too
scared to move. I stood there holding my breath. (
I was a stone image in flesh. It made my hair
stand on one end. I was paralysed with fear. I
was unable to move a muscle. It was a fierce
and frightening bull. The flute player
immediately came, chased away the bull and
saved me.
Dictation :
The following paragraph is about the Indian
cobra. Read it twice and close your book.
Your teacher will then dictate the paragraph
to you. Write it down with appropriate
punctuation marks.
Ans. [Note-Class activity.]
Ans. 'Old habits die hard' entirely fits to this sketch. Man is the improved version of a monkey. Presently, man preens himself using a mirror. In ancient time, monkeys (old version of man) preened themselves with it. The same old habit of looking into a mirror is enlivened by this monkey. By looking into the mirror the monkey thinks and ascertains that his face is unchanged. He hasn't learnt the human art of masking according to situations and persons. And it thanks God for keeping it natural and not artificial like today's man.
ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS
I. Answer the following questions in about 20-30 words each :
Q. 1. Mention with facts the similarity between the doctor and the snake.
Ans. The similarity is that they both look into the mirror. The doctor makes two important decisions to look more handsome. The snake makes decision to unwind the doctor to look into the mirror.
Q. 2. To what has the snake been compared and why?
Ans. The snake has been compared to a rubber tube, a leaden rod and a rod made of molten fire. The reasons were—it felt with a thud, weighed heavily on his arm and crushed it.
II. Answer the following questions in about 80 words each :
Q. 1. Highlight the importance of the mirror in the story.
Ans. Mirror has great importance in advancing the story and exposing the nature of living beings. First, the mirror motivates the doctor to make decisions to look more handsome. Thus, the mirror shows him his real personality and weaknesses. Next, it is the mirror that saves the life of the doctor. When the snake turned its head, it looked its reflection into the mirror. So, it unwound the doctor and moved towards the mirror.
Q. 2. Describe the events of thieving and of final insult.
Ans. When the doctor and two others went back to his room to move things from there, he found most of his things had been thieved. The room had been cleaned out. But one thing had been left behind as a final insult. This thing was doctor's vest, the dirty one. The thief had such a sense of cleanliness. He could have taken it and used it after washing it with soap and water.

at the table on which stood the lamp and a large mirror; a small comb lay beside the mirror. One feels tempted to look into a mirror when it is near one. I took a look. In those days I was a great admirer of beauty and I believed in making myself look handsome. I was unmarried and I was a doctor. I felt I had to make my presence felt. I picked up the comb and ran it through my hair and adjusted the parting so that it looked straight and neat. Again I heard that sound from above.
I took a close look at my face in the mirror. I made an important decision—I would shave daily and grow a thin moustache to look more handsome. I was after all a bachelor, and a doctor!
I looked into the mirror and smiled. It was an attractive smile. I made another earth-shaking decision. I would always keep that attractive smile on my face....to look more handsome. I was after all a bachelor, and a doctor too on top of it!

I (doctor) didn't jump. I didn't tremble. I didn't cry out. There was no time to do any such thing. The snake slithered along my shoulder and coiled around my left arm above the elbow. The hood was spread out and its head was hardly three or four inches from my face!
It would not be correct to say merely that I sat there holding my breath. I was turned to stone. But my mind was very active. The door opened into darkness. The room was surrounded by darkness. In the light of the lamp I sat there like a stone image in the flesh.
I felt then the great presence of the creator of this world and this universe. God was there. Suppose I said something and he did not like it.....I tried in my imagination to write in letters outside my little heart the words, 'O God'.
There was some pain in my left arm. It was as if a thick leaden rod—no, a rod made of molten fire—was slowly but powerfully crushing my arm. The arm was beginning to be drained of all strength. What could I do?
