Q. 1. "On the whole, the small society of Rameswaram was very rigid in terms of the segregation of different social groups," says the author.

(i) Which social groups does he mention?

Were these groups easily identifiable (for example, by the way they dressed)?

(ii) Were they aware only of their differences or did they also naturally share friendships and experiences? (Think of the bed-time stories in Kalam's house; of who his friends were; and of what used to take place in the pond near his house.)

(iii) The author speaks both of people who were very aware of the differences among them and those who tried to bridge these differences. Can you identify such people in the text?

(iv) Narrate two incidents that show how differences can be created, and also how they can be resolved? How can people change their attitudes?

Ans. (i) He mentions two social groups — Rameswaram-orthodox Brahmins and Muslims.

Yes, these groups were easily identifiable. For example, by the way they dressed; Kalam wore a cap which marked him as a Muslim. Ramanadha Sastry wore a sacred thread which marked him a Hindu.

(ii) No, they were not only aware of their differences but also naturally shared friendships and experiences. Kalam's mother and grandmother would tell the children of his family bedtime stories about the events from the Ramayana and from the life of the Prophet. All his school friends were orthodox Brahmins. During the annual Shri Sita Ram Kalyanam ceremony, his family used to arrange boats with a special platform for carrying idols of the Lord from the temple to the marriage site, situated in the middle of the pond called Rama Tirtha which was near his house.
| (iv) The first incident to show that how differences can be created is that when the new young teacher found a Muslim student sitting beside a Hindu student, he asked Kalam (the Muslim student) to sit in the last row. His friend Ramanadha Sastry was heartbroken. They informed their respective parents. Lakshmana Sastry summoned the teacher and conveyed the strong sense of conviction which ultimately reformed him.
(iii) The people who were very aware of the differences among them, were : the new young teacher who joined the Rameswaram Elementary School and came to teach Kalam's class, the fifth standard; and his science teacher's conservative wife who refused to serve Kalam in her ritually pure kitchen. Those who tried to bridge these differences, were : Kalam's science teacher Sivasubramania Iyer who invited, served and dined with him to break social barriers so that people could mingle easily; and Lakshmana Sastry who conveyed the strong sense of conviction to the new young teacher to reform him. | The another incident shows that how the differences can be resolved. The author's science teacher, Sivasubramania Iyer, though an orthodox Brahmin with a very conservative wife tried to bridge these differences. One day he invited Kalam to dine with him at his home. His wife was horrified and refused to serve. The teacher served and dined with Kalam. Next time his wife served Kalam. People can change their attitudes by observing no difference in the way of Hindu's and a Muslim's eating of meals, drinking of water and cleaning of the floor.

Q. 2. (i) Why did Abdul Kalam want to leave Rameswaram?

(ii) What did his father say to this?

(iii) What do you think his words mean? Why do you think he spoke those words?

Ans. (i) Abdul Kalam wanted to leave Rameswaram to study at the district headquarters in Ramanathpuram.

(ii) His father gave his consent to go, and said, "Abdul! I know you have to go away to grow. Does the seagull not fly across the sun, alone and without a nest?" But Abdul Kalam's mother did not want her son to leave home. So his father quoted Khalil Gibran to console her, "Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself..... You may give them your love but not your thoughts."

(iii) Abdul Kalam's father's words bear great meanings. First, he inspired his son to go ahead alone giving the example of the seagull. Secondly, he explained Kalam's mother to give his son opportunities to get higher education and to make progress. I think he spoke those words to encourage Abdul Kalam and to control the emotional attachment of his wife for Kalam.

Ans.

Career Building is the only Goal of Education.
or
Getting a Good Job is more important than being a Good Human Being

An important question in the present time is what is the purpose of education? Is it to prepare ourselves for a better career so that we may earn more and more money? I have asked many a young person and parents. Most young people are fascinated by the glamour of modern life. They wish to have big cars, big houses, and a luxurious life style. They want to pursue higher education so that they can find a highly paid job and satisfy their ambition. But I think that is not the aim of life and education. If we pursue education for monetary sake only, we are sure to lose human values. I hope you will agree that money will bring no peace. All of you. I hope, watch TV. You see commercials. They try to lure you to buy more and more products and gadgets. But you will also see millions of people are trying to seek peace of mind through meditation. They are trying to restore their health in Yoga exercises. If money could bring happiness, the wealthy did not need meditation. If cars were good, they would not like to go for morning walk. We can regain peace and happiness if we promote human values. The purpose of education is to ennoble our character.

Education should promote human values. No doubt we should have a good career. But we must not be devoid of love, sympathy, and kindness. Without these human will turn into a monster. He will become a machine, or a robot.

Writing :

Think and write a short account of what life in Rameswaram in the 1940s must have

been like. (Were people rich or poor? Hard working or lazy? Hopeful of change, or resistant to it?).

Ans. Rameswaram is a small island town on the south coast of India. The society was rigidly divided into different social groups. On the whole people were not rich and led austere lives. There were schools and students were given modern education. They were learning science too. But in spite of social segregation, there was cooperation between people. If there were people with orthodox outlook, there were others, who had open minds, and tried to change the system. People on the whole were hardworking. After the war, they looked forward to a great change. Under the leadership of Gandhiji, they hoped they would win freedom, and they would build a new India, a different India.

SEEN PASSAGES

Read the passages given below and answer the questions that follow :

Passage : 1

I was born into a middle-class Tamil family in the island town of Rameswaram in the erstwhile Madras State. My father, Jainulabdeen, had neither much formal education nor much wealth; despite these disadvantages, he possessed great innate wisdom and a true generosity of spirit. He had an ideal helpmate in my mother, Ashiamma. I do not recall the exact number of people she fed every day, but I am quite certain that far more outsiders ate with us than all the members of our own family put together.

I was one of many children—a short boy with rather undistinguished looks, born to tall and
handsome parents. We lived in our ancestral house, which was built in the middle of the nineteenth century. It was a fairly large pucca house, made of limestone and brick, on the Mosque Street in Rameswaram. My austere father used to avoid all inessential comforts and luxuries. However, all necessities were provided for, in terms of food, medicine or clothes. In fact, I would say mine was a very secure childhood, both materially and emotionally.

Passage : 2

One day when I (Kalam) was in the fifth standard at the Rameswaram Elementary School, a new teacher came to our class. I used to wear a cap which marked me as a Muslim, and I always sat in the front row next to Ramanadha Sastry, who wore the sacred thread. The new teacher could not stomach a Hindu priest's son sitting with a Muslim boy.
