1. I get ........................................................... Buddhists.

2. At Pashupatinath ......................................... on earth.

3. At the Baudhnath ......................................... around.

4. Kathmandu is ......................................... for it.

5. I consider ................................................. flight.

6. I look at ......................................... for years.

7. I find ................................................................. go on.

  1. That I can ................................................ now do.

TEXTUAL QUESTIONS

Thinking About The Text :

Ans. The flute seller doesn't shout out his wares while the other hawkers do it. He makes a sale in a curiously offhanded way as if this were incidental to his enterprise.

Q. 3. The author has drawn powerful images and pictures. Pick out three examples each of:
(i) the atmosphere of 'febrile confusion' outside the temple of Pashupatinath (for example : some people trying to get the priest's attention are elbowed aside....).
(ii) the things he sees.
(iii) the sounds he hears.

\bullet Stray cows low questioningly at motorcycles.

III. Answer the following questions in not more than 100-150 words each :

Q. 1. Compare and contrast the atmosphere in and around the Baudhnath shrine with the Pashupatinath temple.

Ans. At the Baudhnath shrine there is a sense of stillness. There are no crowds though small shops stand on the outer edge. Felt bags, Tibetan prints and silver jewellery can be bought here. This is a heaven of quietness in the busy streets around.

At Pashupatinath temple, there is an atmosphere of febrile confusion. Priests, hawkers, devotees, tourists, cows, monkeys, pigeons and dogs roam through the ground. A party of saffron clad Westerners struggle for permission to enter. A fight breaks out between two monkeys. Vendors shout out their wares. Film songs blare out from the radios, car horns sound, bicycle bells ring and stray cows low questioningly at motorcycles. There is noise of the traffic.

Q. 2. How does the author describe Kathmandu's busiest streets?

Ans. The author describes Kathmandu's busiest streets lively and picturesquely. There are small shrines to flower adorned deities along the narrowest and busiest streets.

There are fruit sellers, flute sellers, hawkers of postcards, shops selling Western cosmetics, film rolls and chocolate, copper utensils and Nepalese antiques. Film songs blare out from the radios, car horns sound, bicycle bells ring, stray cows low questioningly at motorcycles and vendors shout out their wares.

Sweet is available. The author buys a bar of marzipan. Roasted corn-ears are also available. The author buys one rubbed with salt, chilli powder and lemon. Books can also be bought. The author buys a couple of love story comics and even a Reader's Digest. Cold drinks and orange drink are available too.

Q. 3. 'To hear any flute is to be drawn into the commonality of all mankind.' Why does the author say this?

Ans. 'To hear any flute is to be drawn into the commonality of all mankind', the author says this because there are some common and universal characteristics between a flute and the community of all mankind. A flute needs to pause and breathe before it can go on. Likewise, mankind has to pause for breath before they can utter phrases and sentences. Flute's motive force is living breath. Similarly, mankind's motive force is also the living breath.

Flute is universal. There is no culture that does not have its flute. Each has its specific fingering and compass. It weaves its own associations. Its music is the most universal and most particular of sounds. The author is so affected by a few familiar phrases of bansuri that he attaches significance to it. Flute music makes it difficult for him to tear away.

Ans. An arrogant lion was wandering through the jungle one day. He asked the tiger, ‘Who is strogner than you?’ ‘You, O lion’, replied the tiger. ‘Who is more fierce than a leopard?’ asked the lion. ‘You, Sir’, replied the leopard. Tourist guides were following the people. Foreigners were taking photos. I also made friendship with them. We had snaps together. Then, it was closing time. I returned but with happiness.

II. Answer the following questions in about 80 words each :

Q. 1. How does the author draw attention on chaos in Indian sub-continent.

Ans. The author terms this chaos in Indian sub-continent as 'febrile confusion'. Priests, hawkers, devotees, tourists, cows, monkeys,

pigeons and dogs roam through the ground at Pashupatinath temple. Worshippers are trying to get the priests attention by pushing one another. Old, wilted offerings are dropped into the holy Bagmati river. Car horns, bicycle bells, stray cows, motorcycles and vendors shouting out their wares, make this chaos worst. Thus, the atmosphere is full of complete chaos.

At Pashupatinath (outside which a sign proclaims 'Entrance for the Hindus only') there is an atmosphere of 'febrile confusion'. Priests, hawkers, devotees, tourists, cows, monkeys, pigeons and dogs roam through the grounds. We offer a few flowers. There are so many worshippers that some people trying to get the priest's attention are elbowed aside by others pushing their way to the front. A princess of the Nepalese royal house appears; everyone bows and makes way. By the main gate, a party of saffron-clad Westerners struggle for permission to enter. The policeman is not convinced that they are 'the Hindus' (only Hindus are allowed to enter the temple). A fight breaks out between two monkeys. One chases the other, who jumps onto a shivalinga, then runs screaming around the temples and down to the river, the holy Bagmati, that flows below. A corpse is being cremated on its banks; washerwomen are at
