घुसपैठिया : तुम यहाँ अधिक देर तक नहीं रहोगे। इसलिए मैंने पूछने का कष्ट नहीं किया।
जेरॅड : तुम्हारा मतलब क्या है?
घुसपैठिया : यह तुम्हारे लिए एक बड़ा आश्चर्य है। मैं तुम्हें मारने जा रहा हूँ।
जेरॅड : यह तो एक कठोर कार्य है।
घुसपैठिया : (अधिक व्यंग्य से) हाँ, मुझे ऐसा करने में अफसोस होगा। मुझे तुम अच्छे लगने लगे हो परन्तु ऐसा करना ही होगा।
जेरॅड : अपने दूसरे अपराधों में कत्ल को शामिल क्यों करो? यह तुम बहुत गम्भीर कदम उठा रहे हो।
घुसपैठिया : मैं आनन्द के लिए यह कदम नहीं उठा रहा हूँ। बहुत दिनों से मुझे तलाशा जा रहा है। पहले से ही कत्ल के मामले में मेरी तलाश है तथा मुझे दो बार फाँसी पर लटकाया नहीं जा सकता।

जेरॅड : तो यह कहा जाए कि तुम बिना कारण के

दोबारा अपराध की योजना बना रहे हो। मानता हूँ कि तुम्हारे पास खोने के लिए कुछ भी नहीं है परन्तु लाभ क्या है?
घुसपैठिया : मुझे स्वतन्त्रता का लाभ होगा। जहाँ तक मेरा प्रश्न है। मुझे चूहे की भाँति तलाशा जा रहा है। विन्सैन्ट चार्ल्स जेरॅड के रूप में मैं कई स्थानों पर जा सकूंगा तथा कुछ नहीं करूँगा। मैं भली-भाँति खा सकूँगा, सो सकूँगा और सिपाही को देखते ही भागने के लिए तैयार नहीं रहना होगा।
जेरॅड : अधिकतर गीत-नाटकों में खलनायक इतना मूर्ख होता है कि दूसरे के मारने के कार्य को इतना लटका देता है कि निराश हो जाता है। तुम तो कहीं अधिक भाग्यवान हो।

5. Intruder : I'm O.K. .......................... mystery.

जेरॅड : यह बहुत अच्छा है परन्तु मेरी बात समझ में नहीं आई। मैंने कहा था कि तुम अधिकतर गीत नाटिका के खलनायकों से अधिक भाग्यशाली हो। यह तुम्हारी बुद्धिमत्ता की प्रशंसा नहीं थी। तुम किसी बहुत अच्छे कारण के लिए मेरी हत्या नहीं करोगे।

जेरैंड : एक रहस्य जो मैं समझाना चाहता हूँ।

घुसपैठिया : बैग तो यह है पर यह भी पिस्तौल है। यह सब क्या है?
जेरैंड : यह वेश बदलने का सामान है। नकली मूँछें तथा कई कुछ। क्या तुम्हें अब विश्वास हो गया है?
घुसपैठिया : (सोचते हुए) मुझे नहीं पता।
जेरैंड : भगवान के लिए अपना गड़बड़ दिमाग ठीक करो तथा आओ हम चलें। कार में मेरे साथ आओ। मैं तुम्हारा प्रयोग कर सकता हूँ। यदि तुम्हें यह चालाक योजना लगे तो तुम कार में होंगे तथा आपके पास पिस्तौल भी होगी।
घुसपैठिया : हो सकता है कि तुम ठीक कहते हो।
जेरैंड : तो समय नष्ट मत करो। (जाकर अपना टोप व बैग उठाता है)
घुसपैठिया : बॉस सावधान रहना, मैं तुम्हें देख रहा हूँ।
जेरैंड : मैंने एक व्यक्ति को सड़क पर तैनात कर रखा है। यदि उसने पुलिस को देखा तो वह टेलीफोन कर देगा। परन्तु मैं जाना नहीं चाहता (टेलीफोन की घंटी बजती है) आओ, पुलिस हमारा पीछा कर रही है। यहाँ से होकर सीधे गैराज चलें।

घुसपैठिया : (दरवाजा खड़काता है और चिल्लाता है), "मुझे यहाँ से निकालो।"

Ans. Yesterday when I was packing my bag to leave the house, an intruder broke into my house. He resembled me in build and appearance except for specs and his fleshy clothes. He pointed a gun at me and started talking. He told me that he wanted to kill me and then impersonate me. He did not kill me immediately for he wanted to know more about me. That gave me time to fabricate a story. I told him that there was no use to kill and impersonate me as I, myself was a murderer trying to run away from the police. That is why I was leaving the house. I added that one of my men had been arrested and he told the police everything about me. To convince him I showed him my bag. It had a disguise suit that I was taking for the rehearsal. He half believed me. I offered to help him to escape with me in my car. He still doubted me. I asked him to look out and check himself if the man posted by me to inform me about the arrival of police was there or not. I opened the door at the cupboard. As he looked in it, I pushed him in the cupboard. His revolver fell off his hand. I locked him in the cupboard and called the police to arrest him. That's how I outwitted him.

Intruder is a criminal who breaks into houses and shops. He steals jewels. He has killed a policeman and is trying to save himself. He has thought of a clever plan. He wants to go about disguised as Gerrard because he resembles him closely. So he wants to kill Gerrard. He belongs to a class of people who are not intelligent. He comes in like a lion. He is confident that he will have his way. But he is outwitted by Gerrard. He turns into a lamb and is easily overpowered.

Gerrard is a playwright. He lives alone in a lonely cottage. One day, he was about to leave with his bag containing disguise outfit, false moustache, beard etc. Suddenly a man comes in. He has a revolver in his hand. Gerrard is surprised but keeps his cool. The intruder resembles Gerrard. The intruder tells him that he has come to kill him.

But he does not shoot at Gerrard at once. He has a motive. He appears to have found out much about Gerrard and his habits. But he wants to know more. The intruder has killed a policeman, and he hopes to go about unsuspected as Gerrard. Gerrard invents a story to outwit the intruder. He tells the intruder that his plan cannot succeed. He says that he too has murdered somebody and the police is expected to arrive soon. The intruder realises that it is no use killing Gerrard. He is sure to be hanged. He looks into Gerrard's bag. This convinces him that Gerrard was speaking the truth. He agrees to escape with Gerrard in his car. Gerrard leads him to a cupboard. The stupid intruder takes it for the exit. As he steps into it, Gerrard gives him a push. His revolver falls to the floor. Gerrard locks him in the cupboard and calls the police.
