He faces the problem of decision-making. He is supposed to choose the road for travelling further.

Question 2.
Discuss what these phrases mean to you :
(i) a yellow wood
(ii) it was grassy and wanted wear
(iii) the passing there.
(iv) leaves no step had trodden black
(v) how way leads on to way

Question 3.
Is there any difference between the two roads as the poet describes them :
(i) in stanzas two and three?
(ii) in the last two lines of the poem?

Answer:
(i) In stanzas two and three, the poet finds no difference between the two roads. The poet in the second stanza says that the other road is also just as fair. In the third stanza the poet says that both the roads lay equally that morning.
(ii) In the last two lines the poet says that he took the less travelled road which made all the difference.

Question 4.
What do you think the last two lines of the poem mean? (Looking back, does the poet regret his choice or accept it?)
Answer:
The last two lines of the poem mean that he took the road less travelled by and it made all the difference in his life.
Looking back, the poet seems to be regretting his choice. He missed the opportunity standing then and there. He postponed it for another day. He thinks perhaps his life would have been happier if he had taken the road more travelled by.

II.
Question 1.
Have you ever had to make a difficult choice (or do you think you will have difficult choices to make)? How will you make the choice (for what reasons)?
Answer:
Yes, I once had to make a difficult choice (or I think I’ll have difficult choices to make.) I’ll make the choice for the following reasons : First, I’ll weigh on the merits and demerits. Then, I’ll consult with my family, friends and guides.

Question 2.
After you have made a choice do you always think about what might have been, or do you accept the reality?
Answer:
After I have made a choice I always think about what might have been. I accpet the reality but I make amend on the basis of my own experience in the matter. And then make the realistic or practical choice and ensure success.

Important Questions and Answers

Question 1.
Give the theme/central idea of the poem briefly.
Answer:
The theme/central idea of the poem is decision-making. When two roads diverged in a yellow wood, the poet makes a decision to take the one less travelled by. And this decision made all the difference.

Question 2.
Highlight the message of the poem.
Answer:
The poem gives the message of utilization of opportunity and of accepting challenges. The poet did not utilise the opportunity of treading the road more travelled by. And this made all the difference. But he accepted the challenge and trode the untrodden path.

Question 3.
In the poem ‘The Road Not Taken’ which road did the poet take? How did he make the choice?
Answer:
There were two roads-one was more trodden, the other was less trodden. The poet stood at the crossing for a long time and considered thoughtfully which road to take. At last he chose the second less trodden road.

Question 4.
What sort of road seemed the first one? Why was it so?
Answer:
The first road seemed easier and more trodden because more people had walked on it. It is a common trend, a common human nature to go after the easier way and avoid difficulties or uncertainties. Only a few adventurous people take the unusual path.

Question 5.
Discuss on the aptness of the title of the poem ‘The Road Not Taken’.
Answer:
The title is apt and suggestive. The title ‘The Road Not Taken’ suggests he choice which was not made. The poet didn’t make a choice for the easy path so he had to suffer in his life.

Question 6.
How does the poem ‘The Raod Not Taken’ open ?
कविता ‘The Road Not Taken’ कैसे आरंभ होती है?
Answer:
The poem “The Road Not Taken’ opens with the information that the poet is travelling on a road but at some place in a yellow wood this road is divided into two. The poet then stands long to make a choice.

Question 7.
Why does the poet take the other road and not the first one ?
Answer:
The poet takes the other road because he wants to tread upon less travelled one or travel on a difficult or challenging one. He does not take the first road as it is an easy road.

Question 8.
Why does the poet doubt his coming back ?
Answer:
The poet doubts his coming back because it so happens in our life that once a road is taken or a choice is made then it leads to another and so on.

Question 9.
How does the poem ‘The Road Not Taken’ conclude ?
कविता ‘The Road Not Taken’ कैसे समाप्त होती है?
Answer:

Explanations with Reference to the Context

Stanza 1.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel ‘both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Reference : These lines have been taken from the poem ‘The Road Not Taken’, composed by Robert Frost. The poet is talking about making choices that shape us.

Context : The poet stands confused as to which road he should take. Being one person, he could not take both the roads, that diverged from there.

Explanation : The poet is talking about an ordinary experience of making a choice as to which road he should take. He has two roads before him that separate from each other and take a different direction. Being one traveller he cannot travel both. He stands confused for a long time, looking down one of them as far as he can. The road finally gets lost in a dense. growth of plants and bushes. These lines symbolically describe a state of mental confusion which man has to face while making a choice.

Stanza 2.

Then took the other, just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.

Reference : These lines have been taken from the poem, “The Road Not Taken’ composed by Robert Frost. This poem is about making choices that shape us.

Context : The poet has two roads before him. He has to choose one of them. Both the roads appear to him to be equally good. However, after much confusion, he chooses one of them.

Explanation : The poet has two roads before him. After much thought, he takes the other one which he finds equally good. Perhaps, it is better than the first one, being grassy and unused. However, both the roads are equally worn out if one passes over them and observes attentively. The poet is in a state of mental confusion as to the road he should take. He finds both the roads equally good and worn out. It is, thus, difficult for him to choose one of them. Life, in the like manner, presents such situations when a person has to make a difficult choice.

Stanza 3.

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

Reference : These lines have been extracted from Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken’. This well-known poem is about making choices that shape us.

Context : The poet finds before him two roads that are equally good and worn out. He has to choose one. He is confused. However, he chooses the other one and keeps the first one for another day.

Explanation : The poet finds himself in an autumn wood from where two roads diverge into different directions. He finds both the roads equally good, but he has to choose one of them. Both of them are equally covered with leaves on which no one has trodden upon.

The leaves seem to be intact. He keeps the first road for another dry and chooses the second one for his travel. He knows that it is difficult to come back once he makes his choice of the road. One road leads to another and makes returning difficult and often impossible. In life too, a man has to keep to his chosen path.

Stanza 4.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence;
Two roads diverged in a wood, and
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Reference : These are the concluding lines from Robert Frost’s poem, ‘The Road Not Taken’. This poem is about making choices that shape our lives.

Context : The poet chooses one of the two roads that are equally good. However, the road that he chooses is less travelled by. The poet seems to be full of regret for having done so. He says he will be telling after a long, long time that he chose a less travelled road, which has made all the difference.

Explanation : The poet is full of regret for having chosen a road that he considered less travelled by. He will be expressing this regret by sadly telling after a long, long time that he made a wrong choice. Perhaps, he would have been happier if he had made a different choice.

The poet conveys the message that every man has to make a difficult choice in his life. But he is never happy with his choice and is full of regret. He wishes he had made a different choice.
