Peggy is her closest friend, too. She is different from Peggy. She is a poor girl. She has sympathy for Wanda whereas Peggy hasn’t. She has lack of courage while Peggy hasn’t.

Yes, Peggy’s friendship is important to Maddie because Peggy is the most liked girl in the room so Peggy’s closeness is fruitful to Madie. 
The following lines from the text tell us this : ‘Peggy and Maddie, her inseparable friend, were always the last to leave.’ “Peggy could not possibly do anything that was really wrong, she thought.

They burst into applause. They stamp on the floor and whistle. We know this by Miss Mason’s announcement, children’s whistling and Maddie’s and Peggy’s admittance.

II. The Narrative Voice (वर्णन करने वाला वाच्य) 

कहानी तृतीय पुरुष (third person) में है, जिसका अर्थ है, कि वर्णनकर्ता इस कहानी में प्रतिभागी नहीं है। किंतु, वर्णनकर्ता कहानी में पात्रों में से किसी एक के दृष्टिकोण का अक्सर उल्लेख करता हुआ प्रतीत होता है। उदाहरण के लिए, इस वाक्य के तिरछे लिखे शब्दों को ध्यानपूर्वक देखें।

We generally judge people by their money, wealth or possessions. It is a wrong approach. A person’s worth is known by his qualities and something of a permanent value in his character. The present story is about Wanda Petronski, a young Polish girl, who goes to school with other American children in an American town. She is made fun of by her classmates and other children because of her faded clothes, hats, shoes and her funny name. However, she wins girls’ medal in dress designing contest. She is applauded by all for her artistic talent.

In that corner of the room sit the rough boys who do not get good marks. She is very quiet and rarely speaks. She comes all the way from Boggins Heights. The children never think, about her except when they wish to have fun with her. They like to tease her. She however, has artistic talent and wins girls’ medal in dress-designing.

Peggy and Maddie or Madeline are other girls in Wanda’s class. Peggy is the most popular girl in school. She is pretty, she has many pretty clothes and her hair is curly. Maddie is her closest friend. They often wait for Wanda to have fun with her. She often teases Wanda by asking, through politely how many dresses she has hanging up in her closest. To her question, she replies that she has a hundred dresses. She (Peggy) and others laugh loudly at this. Peggy can draw pictures better than anyone else. She is hoped to win the girls’ medal.

She does not like that Peggy should harass the poor girl, Wanda, by asking her about her dresses. However, she is afraid of asking Peggy for this.
