(i) Why are the young trees described as ‘sprinting’ ?

( My Mother at Sixty-six )

The young trees described as sprinting because the poet is driving to the Cochin airport. She looks outside and finds that trees coming fast towards her. They seem to be running fast. … Trees can’t sprint they only seen to be sprinting when we pass by them in a fast-moving vehicle.

(ii) What do you think is the colour of sour cream? Why do you think the poet has used this expression to describe the classroom walls ?

( An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum )

Ans: The colour of ‘sour cream’ is off white. The poet has used this expression to suggest the decaying aspect. The deterioration in the colour of the classroom walls symbolises the pathetic condition of the lives of the scholars—the children of this slum school.

(iii) What is the childish longing that the poet refers to ? Why is it ‘vain’ ?

( A Roadside Stand )

ANSWER: The poet refers to the farmers’ longing for customers at their roadside stall as “childish longing”. This is because no one stopped and even if they did, it was for asking direction or to buy gas. Hence, this child-like wait is ‘vain’.

(iv) What is suggested by the image ‘massive weight of uncle’s wedding band’ ?

( Aunt Jennifer’s Tiger ) 2

Answer: The ‘wedding band’ that the poet talks about was the wedding ring worn by Aunt Jennifer. The image ‘massive weight of Uncle’s wedding band’ suggests that she was overburdened with duties and responsibilities, post her marriage.

(v) What did Franz notice that was unusual about the school that day?

(The Last Lesson)

Answer: Franz noticed that the school was unusually quiet. Usually, there was a great commotion of the opening and closing of desks, of lessons repeated in unison, and the teacher’s huge ruler rapping on the table. But that particular day, it was as quiet as Sunday morning.

(vi) What could be some of the reasons for the migration of people from village?

(Lost Spring)

There are many factors that cause migration of people from villages to cities. Some villagers voluntarily move to the cities in search for jobs and better civic and health facilities, etc. Others are forced to migrate when natural disasters like flood, storm, drought, famine, etc. destroy their houses and properties.

(vii) How was Gandhiji able to influence lawyers? Give reasons.

(INDIGO)

Gandhi was able to influence the lawyers through his conviction, earnestness and pertinent questioning. Gandhi reproached the lawyers of Muzaffarpur for charging a large sum of money as fee from the peasants. … Gandhi also convinced the lawyers not to seek support from an Englishman and be self-reliant.

(viii) How did the Maharaja prepare himself for the hundredth tiger which was supposed to decide the fate ?

( The Tiger King )

Answer: The Maharaja decided to be extremely vigilant when dealing with the hundredth tiger which was supposed to be the reason why he died. On seeing the hundredth, he followed and took a good aim at the tiger.

(iii) Was Dr. Sadao arrested on the charge of harbouring an enemy?

( The Enemy )

It was against the laws to shelter an enemy as Dr. Sadao had sheltered an enemy soldier but he can’t be arrested and punished for harbouring the enemy.
