Ans. The word, “cardboard” has been used for the photograph of the poetess’ mother. This word has been used for the photograph because the dear mother of the poetess is already dead.

‘कार्डबोर्ड’ शब्द का प्रयोग कवयित्री की माँ की तस्वीर के लिए किया गया है। इस शब्द को तस्वीर के लिए इसलिए प्रयोग में लिया है क्योंकि कवयित्री की माँ पहले ही मर चुकी है।

Ans. The camera has captured a scene in which three little girls are standing in shallow water on the sea beach. The oldest of the three is poetess’ mother. She is nearly 12 years old. The other two are her (mother’s) girl cousins. Each cousin is holding one hand of the poetess’ mother. They are smiling through their hair at the uncle who was taking the photograph.

Ans. The sea has not changed over the years, but the people who walked on its beach have changed terribly. Some of them are already dead. This suggests that human life is transient and short-lived, whereas the sea is unchanged and permanent. I

Ans. The poetess’ mother laughed at the snapshot because she felt joyed over her happy childhood days. The laugh indicated her youthful spirit.

कवयित्री की माँ तस्वीर को देख कर हँसी थी क्योंकि उसे बचपन के सुखद दिनों के बारे में प्रसन्नता महसूस हुई थी। यह हँसी उसकी युवा भावना को दर्शाती है।

Q. 5. What is the meaning of the line : “Both wry with the laboured ease of loss”?

“Both wry with the laboured ease of loss” पंक्ति का तात्पर्य क्या है?

Ans. The poetess means that the faces of her mother as well her own were distorted with unhappiness and disappointment. The mother and the daughter both had lost something about which they felt intensely. The mother had lost the joy of her childhood, whereas the poetess had lost the laughter of her mother who was now dead. They knew about their losses, but they tried hard to forget them. By doing so they tried to get some relief with great difficulty.

कवयित्री का कहने का यह तात्पर्य है कि उसकी माँ का तथा स्वयं का चेहरा दु:ख एवं निराशा से विकृत हो जाता था। माँ तथा पुत्री दोनों ने कोई चीज़ खो दी थी जिसके बारे में वे अत्यधिक दु:ख महसूस करती थीं। माँ ने अपने बचपन के आनन्द खो दिये थे, जबकि कवयित्री ने उसकी माँ की हँसी को खो दिया था जो अब जीवित नहीं थी। वे अपनी हानियों को जानती थीं लेकिन वे उन्हें भुलाने की कठोर कोशिश किया करती थीं। ऐसा करके वे मुश्किल से कुछ राहत प्राप्त करने का प्रयास करती थीं।

‘this circumstance’ किसकी ओर संकेत करता है?

Ans. This refers to the present mental state of the poetess who is extremely sad and lonely in the absence of her mother.

यह कवयित्री की वर्तमान मानसिक दशा की ओर संकेत करता है जो अत्यधिक दु:खी एवं अकेली हो गई। माँ की अनुपस्थिति के कारण ऐसा हुआ है।

कविता के तीनों पद्यांश तीन विभिन्न अवस्थाओं का चित्रण करते हैं। वे अवस्थाएँ क्या हैं?

Ans. It is correct to say that the three stanzas depict three different phases. (i) The first stanza depicts the happy childhood of the poetess’ mother. (ii) The second stanza depicts the losses which the poetess and her mother suffered. The poetess suffered the loss of her mother’s laughter and her mother suffered the loss of the joys of a happy childhood. (iii) Similarly, the third stanza brings out the sadness and loneliness of the poetess. ._

यह कहना सही है कि तीनों पद्यांश तीन विभिन्न अवस्थाओं का चित्रण करते हैं। (i) प्रथम गद्यांश कवयित्री की माँ के सुखद बचपन का चित्रण करता है। (ii) द्वितीय गद्यांश कवयित्री तथा उसकी माँ को हुई हानियों को चित्रित करता है। कवयित्री उसकी माँ की हँसी से वंचित हो गई जबकि उसकी माँ ने अपना सुखद बचपन खो दिया। (iii) इसी प्रकार तृतीय गद्यांश कवयित्री की उदासी एवं अकेलेपन को उजागर करता है।
