Ans. By January 4, they were able to pump out most of the water that had flooded in. They had their first meal in almost two days. However, their condition became desperate again by dawn on January 5 because of winds and high waves. Jon asked the author whether they were going to die and said that they were not afraid of dying if they could all be together. The author was determined to fight the sea with everything he had. He stopped the ship using an improvised anchor. That evening Mary and the author sat together holding hands. Both the author and Mary felt that the end was very near.

Q. 3. Describe the shifts in the narration of the events as indicated in the three sections of the text. Give a sub-title to each section.

Ans. 1. Preparation for the Voyage and the Encounter with the Deadly Waves—The first section of the text describes preparations for the great voyage around the earth. The first leg of their journey from Plymouth, England, to Cape Town passed pleasantly. From Cape Town onwards to the east, they had to face strong gales and alarmingly high waves. On the evening of January 2, the ship was struck by a very gigantic wave which smashed the ship and threw the author overboard. However, he was saved miraculously. He had his ribs and teeth broken and his mouth was filled with blood. The water that had flooded the ship had to be pumped out. They made calls on their radio for the help with no response. Sue had a head injury and black eyes.

2. From Respite to Desperation—The second section begins with some respite from the storm and its consequences. The water level was under control and they could take some rest. They hoped to reach the islands provided the wind and the waves abated. They had their first meal in two days. By January 5, their situation was again desperate. Jon declared that he was not afraid of dying. The author made all efforts to save the ship. However, the storm subsided by the morning of January 6. The author made fresh calculations in his chart-room.

3. The Victory of Courage and Optimism—The third section describes their landing on the island of Amsterdam, their welcome by the inhabitants and the author’s reflection on the courage and optimism of everyone of them, including the children.

Talking about the Text:

Discuss the following questions with your partners :

Q. 1. What difference did you notice between the reaction of the adults and the children when faced with danger?

Ans. We don’t find any difference between the reaction of the adults and the children when faced with danger. Both behave courageously without giving up. We see in this story that the author makes use of all the resources of his body and mind to cope successfully with the dangerous sea. Even when he finds that their end was near he does not give up the fight. The sight of his injured children does not discourage him. His wife, Mary, is equally bold. She keeps at the wheel at the crucial moments. Similarly, Larry and Herb are cheerful and optimistic under the direst stress.

Strangely enough, even the children show a rare courage in face of danger. They help the adults by not making much of their injuries and by not panicking. Jon, by stating that they are not afraid of dying only makes things easier for the author. Similarly, Sue draws caricatures of her parents to make them laugh even in the direst of situation. __

Q. 2. How does the story suggest that optimism helps to endure “the direst stress” ?

Ans. Optimism and courage together make even impossible things not only possible, but also easily achievable. Had the author given up under the direst stress, he would have perished along with his family and the crew. He could face the dangers with determination and courage because he was a hopeful man. Hope and courage make him victorious in the end. Not only the author, but also his wife, Mary and children, Jon and Sue, are optimistic despite their injuries and pains. Larry and Herb fight off the direst stress by keeping cheerful and optimistic to the very end. Thus, this story conveys a message of optimism to the readers.

Q. 3. What lessons do we learn from such hazardous experiences when we are face-to-face with death?

Ans. Such hazardous experiences bring out the best in man. In the present story we learn about the great qualities of the author and the others who were with him on the journey. The first lesson to be learnt from this story is, “Hope for the best and be prepared for the worst.”

We also learn that only hoping for the best is not enough. We must work hard with courage to achieve the best. Failures must inspire us to go forward rather than stop and give up. We also learn that courage and determination to fight out to the very end take the ship to its destination. Finally, we learn that we should have love and sympathy for those who stand by us in different situations. We learn this from Jon and Sue.

Q. 4. Why do you think people undertake such adventurous expeditions in spite of the risks involved ?

Ans. Love of adventure is instinctive in man. He loves taking risks. Just as flying is instinctive for a young bird, similarly, undertaking dangerous expeditions is instinctive for man. There is nothing bad about acts of adventure so long as they do not harm others. Adventurous acts develop many positive qualities in man. Determination, courage, optimism, love and sympathy are some of the positive qualities that adventures develop in us. The people involved in the present expedition have all these qualities.
