कठिन शब्दार्थ – crow (क्रो) = कौआ। shook down (शक डाउन्) = हिलाकर नीचे गिरा दी। dust (डस्ट्) = धूल। snow (स्नो) = बर्फ। hemlock (हेम्लॉक) = एक विषैला वृक्ष जिसमें छोटे सफेद पुष्प खिलते हैं।

हिन्दी अनुवाद-कवि कहता है कि जिस तरीके से एक कौए ने हेमलॉक नामक विषमय वृक्ष से बर्फ की धूल को हिलाकर मेरे ऊपर गिराया।

कठिन शब्दार्थ : change (चेन्ज्) = परिवर्तित करना। rued (रुड) = पछतावा किया।

हिन्दी अनुवाद-बर्फ के कणों ने मेरे हृदय की मनोदशा में परिवर्तन कर दिया और दिन का कुछ भाग बचा दिया जिसे भी मैं पछतावे में गंवा देता।

कविता का भावार्थ-संवेदनशील व्यक्ति पर प्रत्येक क्रिया की प्रतिक्रिया होती है। कवि हेमलॉक नामक दु:ख रूपी वृक्ष से पीड़ित था। तभी कौए द्वारा वृक्ष से बर्फ को गिराना अर्थात् दुःख से ही आशा की किरण देखकर कवि की मनोदशा बदलती है अर्थात् वह कार्य करने व समय का सदुपयोग करने का साहस जुटा लेता है।
