Toto had bright, sparkling mischievous eyes, deep-set eyebrows and white pearly teeth. His dry pickled hand had quick wicked fingers and a tail which not only added to his beauty but also worked as his third hand. His mischievous nature added charm to his looks according to the Grandfather.

Question 3.
Why does Grandfather take Toto to Saharanpur and how? Why does the ticket-collector insist on calling Toto a dog?
Answer:
Grandfather takes Toto to Saharanpur because it does not let other pet animals of Grandfather’s private zoo sleep at night. Grandfather takes Toto to Saharanpur in a closed, big, black canvas kit-bag with some straw at the bottom. The ticket collector insists on calling Toto a dog because it suddenly thrusts its head out of the bag and gives the ticket collector a wide grin.

Question 4.
How does Toto take a bath ? Where has he learnt to do this? How does Toto almost boil himself alive?
Answer:
Toto takes a bath as the writer takes his bath. He first checks the temperature of the water by hand. Then; puts his first foot and then the other one until he is in the water upto the neck. Then he takes a soap cake in his hand or feet and rubs it all over.

When water becomes cold he comes out and runs to the fire in the kitchen to dry. He has learnt to do this from the writer. One day Toto would boil himself alive. He gets into the kettle on the fire. When the water starts boiling, he hops but doesn’t come out because of cold outside. By chance, grandmother sees him and saves.

Question 5.
Why does the author say, “Toto was not the sort of pet we could keep for long?”
Answer:
Toto was not only mischievous but also his mischiefs were very trouble some for the family. He tore the expensive wall-paper, dresses, broke plates etc. Grandfathers realised that they could not afford such frequent losses. So, the author gave the above statement.

Talk About It :

Do you have a pet ? Is your pet mischievous ? Tell the class about it.
Answer:
I have a pet dog. Its name is Montmorency and nick name, Mont. It is very mischievous. It comes and goes in the rooms at his will. It sometime plays with lemons as if they were rats. The other time it doesn’t allow anyone to enter the house.

It, many times injures our pet cat, Lucy. One day, it went into the library and ate the poison kept for rats. I immediately carried it to a veterinary doctor. He injected it. And then only it could be saved. Then, we gave it to the zoo.

II. Long Answer Type Questions :

Question 1.
Grandfather was a great lover of animals but he sold Toto back. Explain.
Answer:
Grandfather was a great lover of animals. In his private zoo, he had a pair of rabbits, a tortoise, a squirrel, a goat and a donkey. He bought a baby monkey in five rupees from a tonga driver. He sold this baby monkey-Toto, back because they weren’t well-to-do to afford the frequent loss of dishes, clothes, curtains and wall-paper.

Question 2.
How can you say that Toto liked rice pullao?
Answer:
One day Toto saw a dish of pullao lying on the dining table. He started stuffing himself with it. When Grandmother saw it she screamed. In anger Toto threw a plate.at her. When aunt came forward he threw a glass of water at her and when he saw Grandfather he took away the whole dish and sat on a jack fruit tree, he enjoyed eating every grain of it.

Question 3.
Give an account of Toto’s adventures in Grandfather’s house?
Answer:
The first day when Grandfather tied him to a peg in a closet, Toto broke himself free. He tore the wallpaper and the writer’s blazer. In the servants’ quarters he did not let other animals have a wink of sleep. In the stable he dug his sharp teeth into Nana’s long ear. He stole the dish of pullao and climbed up into the branches of a tree to eat up the rice alone. Of course his adventure in the kettle of hot water would have cost him his life.

Question 4.
Toto and Nana never became friends. Why?
Answer:
Toto was devilishly mischievous. He took pleasure in annoying and bothering others. The very first day, he was kept with Nana, the docile donkey of the writer, he started bothering him. He dug his sharp teeth into his long ear and did not let him eat his hay. From the very first day, Nana started disliking him and they could never become friends.

Question 5.
Write a note on Toto’s journey from the tonga driver and back to him (the same tonga driver).
Answer:
Grandfather buys Toto from a tonga driver. He keeps it in a little closet or ties securely to a peg. He then, transfers it to a big cage in the servants’ quarters. Then, he carries it to Saharanpur and brings back to Dehra Dun. Then, he keeps it in the stable. And finally, he sells it back to the same tonga driver.
