Chapter 4 In the Kingdom of Fools

Textbook Questions and Answers

Think About It :

Question 1.
What are the two strange things the guru and his disciple find in the Kingdom of Fools?
Answer:
The first is that it was broad daylight but there was no one about. Everyone was asleep. Even, the cattle were asleep too. The second is that the whole town woke up . in the evening and in the market everything cost the same, a single duddu – whether it is rice or banana or other grocery.

Question 2.
Why does the disciple decide to stay in the Kingdom of Fools? Is it a good idea?
Answer:
The disciple decides to stay in the Kingdom of Fools because of his love for cheap and good food there. It is not a good idea. It is dangerous to live with fools. You never know what they will do to you next.

Question 3.
Name all the people who are tried in the King’s court, and give the reasons for their trial.
Answer:
First of all the merchant whose wall collapsed causing thief’s death was called for getting such a weak wall constructed. He put the blame on the mason who built the wall. The mason was called. He told that his attention was diverted by a dancing girl who kept on going up and down the street. So the fault was of the dancing girl.

The dancing girl when called, put the blame on the goldsmith who made her walk up and down the street several times making false promises. The goldsmith passed on the blame to the rich merchant who had ordered to make jewellery for him urgently. This merchant happened to be the original owner of the house whose wall had collapsed and killed the thief. But he had died so his son was called again and sentenced to be hanged.

Question 4.
Who is the real culprit according to the king? Why does he escape punishment?
Answer:
The rich merchant whose wall collapses and kills the burglar is the real culprit. He escapes punishment because he is too thin to fit in the newly made stake.

Question 5.
What are the Guru’s words of wisdom? When does the disciple remember them?
Answer:
Guru’s word of wisdom are; “this is no place for us; let’s go; they are all fools; this won’t last very long; you can’t tell what they’ll do to you next. The disciple remembers them when the king’s men found him fit for the stake without his fault.

Question 6.
How does the guru manage to save his disciple’s life?
Answer:
The guru sees everything in a vision. He arrives at once to save his disciple. He tells something in a whisper to him. Then he requests the king to put him (the guru) to death first because he is greater. The disciple says that he wants death first. Thus, they get into a fight.

The king is puzzled. He asks the guru to solve this mystery. The guru says that whoever dies first will be reborn as the king of this country and whoever dies second will be reborn as the minister of this country. The next day, the king and the minister, owing to greed, put themselves on the stake. Thus, the guru manages to save his disciple.

Talk About It :

Q. In Shakespeare’s plays the fool is not really foolish. If you have read or seen Shakespeare’s plays such as King Lear, As you Like It, Twelfth Night, you may talk about the role of the fool.
Do you know any stories in your language about wise fools, such as Tenali Rama or Gopal Bhar ? You can also read about them in Ramanujan’s collection of folk tales.

यदि आपने शेक्सपीयर के कुछ नाटक पढ़े या देखें हैं, जैसे – King Lear, As you Like It, Twelfth Night, तो आप इनमें मूर्ख की भूमिका के बारे में चर्चा करें।
Answer:
In Shakespeare’s plays the fools are not really foolish. They are wise and understanding. Some of their activities do appear to be foolish but we can interpret deeper meaning implicit in them.

Take the example of Orlando in the play “As You Like It’. He seems to be a fool to compete a champion in a wrestling match. But his winning the match reflects his hidden strength and confidence of knowing the art of wrestling.

Again, though he seems to be mad carving Rosalind, the name of his beloved and the poems in her praise on the trees in the forest, yet it reflects his deep love for Rosalind.

In ‘King Lear’ the fool makes fun of those who stick to a great man in his prosperity and forsake him in his adversity.

‘As You Like It’ नाटक में ऑरलेन्डो का उदाहरण लीजिए।

Story Once, Tenali Rama sold one small bundle of jute string in five lac rupees. The king had given Tenali Rama this jute bundle to sell out in two lac rupees. Tenali Rama went into a colony and started measuring the big houses of the rich. They asked about the measurement.

Tenali Rama told them that the road would be widened so their houses would be pulled down. They offered money in lacs to leave the houses safe. Tenali Rama collected the money. He gave it to the king who was very happy.

Question 7.
What complain did the burglar’s brother make to the king?
Answer:
The burglar’s brother complained the king that his brother was pursuing his ancient trade. The weak wall of the house of the merchant fell on him and killed him. The king must punish the merchant and compensate the family.

Question 8.
How did the merchant plead his case before the king?
Answer:
The merchant pleaded before the king that the wall was built in his father’s time. The fault is of the bricklayer who built the weak wall. He lived nearby. So, the king should punish the bricklayer.

Question 9.
How could bricklayer save himself from the punishment?
Answer:
The bricklayer could save himself from the punishment by pleading that a young dancing girl distracted his attention. She went up and down that street all day with her jingling anklets. So, a bad wall got erected.

Question 10.
How did the dancing girl shift the fault on to the goldsmith?
Answer:
The dancing girl explained that she gave some gold to the goldsmith to make some jewellery. His false promises made her walk up and down that street all day. So, it is goldsmith’s fault.

Question 11.
How did the goldsmith save himself from the punishment?
Answer:
The goldsmith pleaded that he was to complete the rich merchant’s order first. The merchant had a wedding coming and he couldn’t wait. So he had to make false promises with the dancing girl. Thus, the fault was of the merchant.

Question 12.
Why couldn’t the son of the merchant be hanged?
Answer:
The son of the merchant couldn’t be hanged because it occurred to the minister that the rich merchant was too thin to be properly executed on the new stake.

Question 13.
How could the Kingdom of Fools become a normal kingdom?
Answer:
After the execution of the foolish king and the silly minister, the people persuaded the guru and his disciple to be the new king and the new minister respectively. Then, they re-established the normal order.

II. Long Answer Type Questions :

Question 1.
You can’t tell what fools will do to you next. Substantiate.
Answer:
It is evident from the case filed by the burglar’s brother and the failed attempt of the disciple’s execution. Burglar’s brother blames the merchant who blames the bricklayer who blames the dancing girl who blames the goldsmith who blames the rich merchant. The disciple is found fit for the new stake. Thus, fools are inpredictable.

Question 2.

Question 3.
How is the life distinct ‘In The Kingdom of Fools’?
Answer:
Life in this tale is distinct in this manner-Here, night has been changed into day and day into night. Everyone awakes at night, tills his fields, runs his business only after dark and goes to bed as soon as the sun comes up. Everything costs a duddu whether a measure of rice or a bunch of bananas.

Question 4.
How does the kingdom become normal again?
Answer:
The kingdom becomes normal again when the guru and the disciple finally agrees to rule the kingdom on the condition that they will change all the old laws. From then on, night becomes again a night and day becomes again a day. Now, one cannot get everything for a duddu. It becomes like any other place.
