TEXTBOOK QUESTIONS

[Think It Out:

Q. 1. Does the poem talk of an exclusively personal experience or is it fairly universal?

Ans. This poem describes a situation in which a son drifts away from his father. A complete estrangement takes place between them. This happens at a later stage when the son becomes a grown up person. The poor father feels sad and forlorn. He plans to rebuild the relationship that existed between them when the son was a small child. The father had brought up the son expecting him to follow his way of life. Unfortunately, just the opposite happens. The son grows up into an independent person with a different life style and drifts away from the father completely. The poor father feels abandoned and cheated. A kind of generation gap has stood between them.

This story is not an exclusively personal experience. This happens with almost every parent. Both have their past behind them and this makes things difficult between them. It is a universal phenomenon.

Q. 2. How is the father’s helplessness brought out in the poem?

Ans. The poem very clearly brings out the helplessness of a father. It is the father, not the son, who feels the pain of estrangement from his son. He fails to understand his son, though they have lived together in the same house for years. They are not even on talking terms. Again, it is the father who feels cheated when his son develops into a different kind of person than he expected. The father tried to bring him up according to his own ideals and designs, but he developed into independent person with his own likes and dislikes. Even then the father is ready to accept his son with all his faults, forgiving him for all the sorrow that the son has given him. He would like to shape a new love from that sorrow.

Thus we see that, it is the father who feels helpless, forlorn and cheated and it is he who thinks of making compromises.
