हिन्दी अनुवाद : अब हम बारह तक गिनती बोलेंगे और हम सब गतिहीन बन जायेंगे। पृथ्वी पर एक बार हम किसी भी भाषा में नहीं बोलेंगे, अर्थात् चुप रहेंगे, हम एक सेकंड के लिए रुकेंगे और हम अपनी बाजुओं को भी नहीं हिलायेंगे। यह एक विलक्षण क्षण होगा, जिसमें न भागदौड़ होगी और न इंजन चलेंगे। हम सब एक अजीब वातावरण में अचानक साथ होंगे। ठंडे समुद्रों में मछुआरे व्हेल मछलियों को नहीं मारेंगे और न ही घायल करेंगे तथा नमक इकट्ठा करने वाला व्यक्ति अपने घायल हाथों की ओर देखेगा।
वे लोग जो हरे युद्ध की तैयारी करते हैं, गैस तथा आग से लड़े जाने वाले युद्धों की तैयारी करते हैं। ऐसे युद्ध जिनमें विजय तो होती है किन्तु कोई भी जीवित नहीं बचता। ऐसे लोग स्वच्छ वस्त्र धारण करेंगे तथा अपने बन्धुओं के साथ छाया में टहलेंगे और (उनके खिलाफ) कुछ नहीं करेंगे।

कठिन शब्दार्थ : confused (कन्फ्यू ज्ड) = गलती से समझ लिया जाये। inactivity (इनऐकटिवटि) = निष्क्रियता। no truck with (नो ट्रक् विद्) = कोई लेना-देना नहीं। single-minded (सिङ्गल माइन्ड्ड) = एक लक्ष्य वाले, एकाग्र। interrupt (इन्टरप्ट्) = बाधा पहुँचाना, रुकावट डालना। threatening (थ्रेटनिङ्) = खतरे में डालना।
हिन्दी अनुवाद : मैं जो चाहता हूँ उसे गलती से पूर्ण निष्क्रियता न समझ लिया जावे। जीवन का जो उद्देश्य है, वह तो है ही, मुझे मृत्यु से कोई लेना-देना नहीं है। अगर जीवन को चलाते रहने का हमारा एकमात्र लक्ष्य न रहा होता और हम केवल एक बार कुछ न करके देखते तो शायद, एक विशाल शान्ति उस उदासी को भंग कर देती जो अपने आप को कभी न समझने तथा अपने को मृत्यु के खतरे में डालने के कारण पैदा होती है।

कठिन शब्दार्थ : Seems (सीम्ज) = प्रतीत होती है । later (लेट(र)) = बाद में। proves to be (प्रवज टु बी) = सिद्ध होती है।
अनुवाद : शायद पृथ्वी हमें सिखा सकती है कि जब सब कुछ मृत प्रतीत होता है तो बाद में वह जीवित सिद्ध होता है। अब मैं बारह तक गिनती बोलता हूँ और आप चुप रहेंगे और मैं चला जाऊँगा।

Explanation—The poet emphasises the importance of keeping still and not speaking a few moments. It would be an unusual moment when there will be no excited movements men and no noise of engines. There will be perfect silence all around and we all will share an unusual experience. It will be a just moment for looking inwards:

व्याख्या–कवि कहता है कि मछुआरे ठंडे समुद्रों में व्हेल मछलियों का शिकार करना रोक देंगे और व्यस्त नमक एकत्र करने वाले लोग उनके घायल हाथों की ओर ध्यान देंगे। जो लोग गैस एवं आग से यद्ध करने की तैयारियों में व्यस्त रहते हैं, वे उनकी गतिविधियों को विराम दे देंगे। वे विध्वंसक युद्ध लड़ने की उनकी योजनाओं पर पनर्विचार करेंगे। इन युद्धों को लड़ा जाता है और जीता जाता है किन्तु लड़ने वाले जीवित नहीं रहते। युद्ध की तैयारियां करने के स्थान पर वे लोग स्वच्छ वस्त्र धारण करेंगे और उनके भाइयों के साथ घूमेंगे और कुछ नहीं करेंगे।

Context–The poet emphasises the importance of keeping quiet and still for some moments during our daily activities. Doing so will provide us an opportunity to introspect, revaluate our actions and re-determine our future plans for the better.
Explanation–Emphasising the importance of a short pause in our activities, the poet now explains his idea further. He says that he is not in favour of total inactivity. Total inactivity is akin to death and he has nothing to do with death. What he wants to say is that we are in the habit of doing things without once reconsidering the good or bad sides of them. This is now we keep our lives moving. He wants us to stop for a while and introspect. A huge silence will result. It will take away our sadness. This sadness is caused by our ignorance – about human-nature, which gives rise to conflicts.

व्याख्या-हमारी गतिविधियों में छोटे-से विराम के महत्व पर जोर देते हुए अब कवि उसके विचार को आगे स्पष्ट करता है । वह कहता है कि वह पूर्ण निष्क्रियता के पक्ष में नहीं है। पूर्ण निष्क्रियता मृत्यु के समान होती है और मृत्यु से उसका कोई संबंध नहीं है। कवि जो कहना चाहता है, वह यह है कि हम चीजों को करते रहने की आदत रखते हैं, बिना उनके अच्छे अथवा बुरे पक्षों पर पुनर्विचार किए । हमारे जीवन को हम इसी तरह संचालित करते हैं । कवि चाहता है कि हम थोड़े समय के लिए ठहरें और आत्मनिरीक्षण करें। ऐसा करने से बहुत बड़ी शान्ति मिलेगी। यह शांति हमारे दु:ख को दूर कर देगी। इस दुःख का कारण है, मानव-प्रकृति के बारे में हमारी अनभिज्ञता, जिससे संघर्षों की उत्पत्ति होती है।

Context-Insisting upon the need for keeping quiet for a moment and doing nothing, the poet exhorts us to learn from the earth which seems dead in autumn but becomes full of life in spring.
Explanation—The poet says that we can learn a lesson from the earth. Just as the earth appears to be dead in autumn but is full of life in spring, we too, can stop, be quiet and still, introspect and be ready for a new enterprise. In other words, we can make a new and better beginning after short pause in our activity.
