Long Answer Type Questions

Answer the following questions in about 80 words.

Question 1.
Elaborate upon the central idea of the poem, ‘Keeping Quiet’.
Answer:
The poem, ‘Keeping Quiet’ composed by Pablo Neruda is all about the benefits and bliss of silence. Brief moments of silence and stillness take away our attention from useless everyday affairs and we are able to focus on our inner self.

It gives us new energy us and stops all such activities that harm our fellow-men and other creatures who share this planet with us. These save nature from its mindless exploitation and man-made pollution, and makes the world a better place to live.

Question 2.
Why does the poet call people ‘single-minded’ ? Why does he warn us about this, and what advice does he give in this regard ?
Answer:
The poet calls people ‘single-minded’ because they spend their entire life in pursuit of wealth, comforts and physical pleasures. This ceaseless activity becomes a race that must be run and won. We have no spare time to introspect or think about our actions.

As a result, we do not understand ourselves and the aim of our life. This blind race dulls our mind and engenders hatred towards our own kind and an uncaring attitude towards nature. The best course would be to stop, revaluate and make corrections in what we do.

Question 3.
According to the poet, which activities would cease if we keep silent and still ? What will be the effect of this ?
Answer:
The poet is of the view that if we stop speaking and keep still, all human activities will come to a halt. It would be an exotic moment, as every movement and the noise of machinery will stop. Fishermen will stop hunting whales in the deep seas, salt-gatherers will stop to tend to their bruised hands, and warring men will understand the folly of war. Instead, people in their new clothes will enjoy the company of their fellow-beings amidst shady trees. Peace and happiness will reign in the world.

Question 4.
Write a brief summary of the poem ‘Keeping Quiet’ in your own words.
Answer:
The poet emphasises the importance of silence and stillness. He wants people to rest and put wars to an end. He asks people to enjoy life and have a care for nature and all the creatures that share the planet with them. He asks people to imagine that eternal moments of absolute peace and silence, when all speech and human activity would cease.

The experience will be energizing and calming for all. The poet gives the examples of fishermen and salt-gatherers who harm nature and themselves thoughtlessly. Finally he tells us to learn from the silence and patience of the earth.
