(ii) What did the cobra and the mongoose do, to show their readiness for the fight?

Answer: 
To show its readiness for the fight, the cobra hissed in defiance, his forked tongue darting in and out. It raised three of its six feet off the ground, and spread its broad and spectacled hood. The mongoose bushed his tail. The long hair on his spine stood up.

लड़ाई की तैयारी दिखाने के लिए कोबरा ने फुफकार दी, उसकी दो भागों में बँटी जीभ अन्दर और बाहर आई। यह जमीन से अपनी छ: फीट लम्बाई में से तीन फीट उठ गया और अपना चौड़ा चश्मेदार फन फैला लिया। नेवले ने अपनी पूँछ हिलाई। उसकी पीठ के लम्बे बाल खड़े हो गए। 

Question 2. 
Who were the other two spectators? What did they do? (Did they watch, or did they join in the fight?)

Answer: 
The other two spectators were a jungle crow and a myna. They settled on a cactus to watch the outcome. But they did not just watch. They tried to join the fight by hurling themselves at the cobra. 

दो दर्शकों में एक जंगली कौआ और एक मैना थे। वे देखने के लिए एक कैक्टस के पौधे पर बैठ गए। मगर उन्होंने केवल देखा ही नहीं। वे उड़कर लड़ाई में कोबरा की ओर झपटे भी थे |

Question 3.
Read the descriptions below of what the snake did and what the mongoose did. Arrange their actions in the proper order.

नीचे साँप ने और नेवले ने क्या किया उसके वर्णन को पढ़िए। उनके कार्यों को सुव्यवस्थित क्रम में जंचाइए।

Question 4.
(i) What happened to the crow in the end?

Answer:
In the end the crow was flung nearly twenty feet across the garden by a blow from the cobra’s snout. It fluttered about for a while, then lay still.

अन्त में लगभग बीस फीट बगीचे के उस पार कौआ जाकर गिरा जब साँप ने अपनी थूथन से उसे मारा। यह थोड़ी देर फड़फड़ाकर शान्त हो गया। 

(ii) What did the myna do finally? 
मैना ने आखिर में क्या किया? 
Answer:
Myna finally dropped cautiously to the ground, hopped about, peered into the bushes from a safe distance and then with a shrill cry of congratulation flew away. 

मैना आखिर में सावधानी से नीचे आई, इधर-उधर कूदी, सुरक्षित दूरी से झाड़ियों में देखा और तब बधाई के तेज स्वर के साथ उड़ गई। 

Working With Language  

Question 1.
The word ’round’ usually means a kind of shape. What is its meaning in the story? ’round’ 
शब्द का अर्थ आमतौर पर एक तरह की आकृति होता है। कहानी में इसका क्या अर्थ है? 
Answer:
The word ’round’ in the story means the different phases of the fight between the cobra and the mongoose. ’round’ 

शब्द का अर्थ कहानी में कोबरा और नेवले की लड़ाई में भिन्न-भिन्न दौर से है। 

Question 2. 
Find five words in the following paragraph, which are generally associated with trees. But here, they have been used differently. Underline the words. 
नीचे गद्यांश में से पेड़ों से आमतौर पर सम्बन्धित पाँच शब्दों को खोजिए। मगर यहाँ पर इनका प्रयोग अलग तरीके से हुआ है। शब्दों को रेखांकित कीजिए। 
Hari leaves for work at nine every morning. He works in the local branch of the firm of which his uncle is the owner. Hari’s success is really the fruit of his own labour. He is happy, but he has a small problem. The root cause of his problem is a stray dog near his office. The dog welcomes Hari with a loud bark every day.

Passage – 1.

Its spreading branches, which hung to the ground and took root again, forming a number of twisting passages, gave me endless pleasure. Among them were squirrels and snails and butterflies. The tree was older than the house, older than Grandfather, as old as Dehra Dun itself. I could hide myself in its branches, behind thick green leaves, and spy on the world below.My first friend was a small grey squirrel. Arching his back and sniffing into the air, he seemed at first to resent my invasion of his privacy.

Passage – 2.

In the spring, when the banyan tree was full of small red figs, birds of all kinds would flock into its branches: the red-bottomed bulbul, cheerful and greedy; parrots, myna and crows squabbling with one another. During the fig season, the banyan tree was the noisiest place in the garden.

Halfway up the tree I had built a crude platform where I would spend the afternoons when it was not too hot. I could read there propping myself up against the tree with a cushion from the living room. Treasure Island, Huckleberry Finn and The Story of Dr. Dolittle were some of the books that made up my banyan tree library.

Passage – 3.

Hissing defiance, his forked tongue darting in and out, the cobra raised three of his six feet off the ground, and spread his broad, spectacled hood. The mongoose bushed his tail. The long hair on his spine stood up. Though the combatants were unaware of my presence in the tree, they were soon made aware of the arrival of two other spectators.

One was a myna, the other a jungle crow. They had seen these preparations for battle, and had settled on the cactus to watch the outcome. Had they been content only to watch, all would have been well with both of them.

Passage – 4.

Moving forward quickly until he was just within the cobra’s reach, the mongoose made a pretended move to one side. Immediately the cobra struck. His great hood came down so swiftly that I thought nothing could save the mongoose. But the little fellow jumped neatly to one side, and darted in as swiftly as
the cobra, biting the snake on the back and darting away again out of reach.

At the same moment that the cobra struck, the crow and the myna hurled themselves at him, only to collide heavily in mid-air. Shrieking insults at each other they returned to the cactus plant. A few drops of blood glistened on the cobra’s back.
