Question 1.
There are moments in life when we have to make hard choices between our roles as private individuals and as citizens with a sense of national loyalty. Discuss with reference to the story you have just read.
जीवन में ऐसे क्षण आते हैं जब हमें एक व्यक्ति और एक राष्ट्रभक्त नागरिक की अपनी दो भूमिकाओं के बीच कठिन चुनाव करने पड़ते हैं । आपके द्वारा अभी पढ़ी गई कहानी के सन्दर्भ में इस पर चर्चा कीजिए ।
Answer:
The story ‘The Enemy’ is about the dilemma faced by a Japanese doctor. An enemy soldier is washed up by the sea and comes at his doorstep. Now as being a loyal Japanese, he should hand over the man to the police. But the man is badly wounded. This appeals the heart of a doctor. Now he has to make choice whether being a doctor first or a patriot. He recalls the principle of his profession that he must save a life if he can. He behaves accordingly.
“The Enemy’ कहानी एक जापानी डॉक्टर की दुविधा के बारे में है। एक शत्रु सिपाही समुद्र में बहकर उसकी चौखट पर आ जाता है। अब एक देशभक्त जापानी होने के नाते उसे उस आदमी को पुलिस को सौंप देना चाहिए । परन्तु वह आदमी बुरी तरह घायल है। यह बात एक डॉक्टर के हृदय को प्रभावित करती । है । अब उसे चुनना है कि वह पहले डॉक्टर बने या देशभक्त। उसे अपने व्यवसाय का सिद्धान्त याद आता है कि यदि उसके वश में हो तो वह अवश्य किसी का जीवन बचाये। वह उसी के अनुसार व्यवहार करता|
Question 2.
Dr Sadao was compelled by his duty as a doctor to help the enemy soldier. What made Hana, his wife, sympathetic to him in the face of open defiance from the domestic staff ?
एक डॉक्टर होने के उनके कर्त्तव्य ने डॉक्टर सदाओ को शत्रु सैनिक की सहायता के लिए बाध्य किया । उनकी पत्नी हाना ने, घरेलू नौकरों के खुले विरोध के बावजूद उसके प्रति सहानुभूति क्यों दिखाई ?
Ans.
Hana was a good-hearted woman. She was a loving and supporting wife too. Though the domestic servants were totally opposed to the idea of helping an enemy soldier, Hana did not think so. Her husband had decided to save his (enemy soldier’s) life. Now, she took it as her duty to take care of him. It was her humanity that made her sympathetic to him. Thus, her goodness and kindness made her behave sympathetically even with her enemy soldier.
हाना हृदय से एक अच्छी महिला थी । वह अपने पति के प्रति प्रेम व साथ देने का भाव रखने वाली पत्नी थी । यद्यपि घरेलू नौकर शत्रु देश के सिपाही की सहायता करने के विचार के पूरी तरह विरुद्ध थे परन्तु हाना ऐसा नहीं सोचती थी । उसके पति ने उसका (दुश्मन सिपाही का) जीवन बचाने का फैसला किया था ।
अब उसने (हाना ने) उसकी देखभाल करना अपना कर्त्तव्य समझा । यह उसकी मानवता थी जिसने उसे उसके (सिपाही के) प्रति सहानुभूतिपूर्ण बना दिया । उसकी दयनीय स्थिति ने उसका (हाना का) हृदय पिघला दिया और उसने उसका बहुत ध्यान रखा । उसने स्वयं उसे साफ किया । उसने उसे अपने हाथों से भोजन भी कराया।
इस प्रकार अपनी अच्छाई व दयालुता के कारण उसने शत्रु देश के सिपाही के साथ भी सहानुभूतिपूर्ण व्यवहार किया । उसने ऐसा इसलिये किया क्योंकि वह सच्चे अर्थों में एक मानव थी । यहाँ तक कि जब उसकी नौकरानी युमी ने उस आदमी को साफ करने से मना कर दिया तो हाना ने स्वयं उसको साफ किया ।
Question 3.
How would you explain the reluctance of the soldier to leave the shelter of the doctor’s home even when he knew he couldn’t stay there without risk to the doctor and himself ?
जबकि सिपाही जानता था कि वह डॉक्टर के और स्वयं के लिए खतरा बने बिना डॉक्टर के घर में नहीं रह सकता था फिर भी वह उस आश्रय को छोड़ने का इच्छुक नहीं था । आप इस बात को किस रूप में समझायेंगे?
Answer:
The soldier was an escaped prisoner of war. He had by chance reached Dr Sadao’s doorstep who had operated upon his wound and saved his life. This made the soldier have great confidence in Dr Sadao and his wife. He knew that their house was a safe place for him.
If he went out of Dr Sadao’s house, there was a danger of his being caught. Therefore, he was reluctant to leave the doctor’s home. He found it a safe haven for himself.
वह सिपाही एक भागा हुआ युद्धबन्दी था । वह संयोगवश डॉ. सदाओ की चौखट पर पहुँच गया था जहाँ उन्होंने उसके घाव का ऑपरेशन किया था और उसका जीवन बचाया था । इससे सिपाही को डॉ. सदाओ और उनकी पत्नी पर गहरा विश्वास हो गया था । वह जानता था कि उनका घर उसके लिए एक सुरक्षित स्थान है । डॉ. सदाओ के घर से बाहर जाने पर उसके पकड़े जाने का खतरा था । इसलिए वह डॉक्टर का घर छोड़ने का इच्छुक नहीं था । उसे उनका घर एक सुरक्षित शरणस्थली लग रहा था ।
Question 4.
What explains the attitude of the General in the matter of the enemy soldier ? Was it a human consideration, lack of national loyalty, dereliction of duty or simply self-absorbption?
शत्रु सैनिक के मामले में जनरल का दृष्टिकोण किस प्रकार है ? क्या यह मानवीय सोच थी, राष्ट्रभवित की कमी थी, कर्त्तव्य निभाने में कोताही थी या बस अपने आप में खोये रहना था ?
Answer:
When the General comes to know about the enemy soldier’s presence in Dr Sadur’s house, he proposes to get him killed secretly. He does not want the matter to come to light because it could put Sadao in danger. Now, Sadao is the only doctor whom the old General trusts for his own health.
All this shows that the General lacks human consideration. Being self absorbed, he forgets about national loyalty and his duty too. His own health is his chief concern. National loyalty and his duty come afterwards for him.
जब जनरल को सदाओ के घर में शत्रु देश के सिपाही की उपस्थिति के बारे में पता चलता है तो वह उसे चुपचाप मरवा देने का प्रस्ताव रखता है । वह इस मामले को प्रकाश में आने देना नहीं चाहता है क्योंकि इससे सदाओ खतरे में पड़ सकता है । अब, सदाओ वह एकमात्र डॉक्टर है जिस पर वह बूढ़ा जनरल अपने स्वास्थ्य के लिए विश्वास करता है ।
यह सब दिखाता है कि जनरल में मानवीय सोच की कमी है। अपने आप में खोकर वह राष्ट्रभक्ति और अपने कर्तव्य को भी भूल जाता है । उसकी मुख्य चिन्ता उसका अपना स्वास्थ्य ही है । उसके लिए राष्ट्रभक्ति और अपना कर्त्तव्य इसके बाद आते हैं।
Question 5.
While hatred against a member of the enemy race is justifiable, especially during wartime, what makes a human being rise above narrow prejudices ?
जबकि शत्रु के प्रति घृणा न्यायोचित है, खासतौर से युद्ध के समय में, तो फिर किस कारण एक मनुष्य संकीर्ण पूर्वाग्रहों से ऊपर उठ पाता है ?
Answer:
Wars give birth to hatred. But hatred can never bring peace to one’s mind. It is the fet ing of love and sympathy that keeps one at peace within himself. These human qualities make a human being rise above narrow prejudices. A person with these qualities considers the whole humanity as his brethren, as we see in the case of Dr Sadao and his wife, Hana. It is sheer pity in their hearts that makes them help him. Dr Sadao operates upon his wound and Hana takes proper care of him.
युद्ध घृणा को जन्म देते हैं । लेकिन घृणा से कभी व्यक्ति का मन शान्त नहीं हो सकता है । प्रेम और सहानुभूति से ही व्यक्ति अपने अन्दर शान्ति पा सकता है । ये मानवीय गुण एक मनुष्य को संकीर्ण पूर्वाग्रहों से ऊपर उठाते हैं । इन गुणों वाला व्यक्ति सम्पूर्ण मानवता को अपना बन्धु मानता है, जैसा कि हम डॉ. सदाओ और उनकी पत्नी, हाना के विषय में देखते हैं। उनके हृदय में शुद्ध दया की भावना के कारण वे उसकी सहायता करते हैं। सदाओ उसके घाव का ऑपरेशन करते हैं और हाना उसकी उचित देखभाल करती है ।

Do you think the doctor’s final solution to the problem was the best possible one in the circumstances? ..
क्या आपको लगता हैं कि तत्कालीन परिस्थितियों में डॉक्टर ने समस्या का जो अन्तिम हल निकाला, वह सबसे अच्छा सम्भव हल था ?
Answer:
Dr Sadao was an expert surgeon and a perfect human being. He could not see a man dying when he could save him. So he did with the soldier of the enemy country. He saved his life by operating upon him. And he also saved himself from the guilt of killing a human being. This seems to be the best possible solution to the problem. Being a doctor first, he saved his life. When he became almost normal, being a patriot he (Dr Sadao) asked him to leave his house.
डॉ. सदाओ एक कुशल डॉक्टर और एक सम्पूर्ण मनुष्य थे। जब किसी व्यक्ति को बचाना उनके वश में हो तो वे उसे मरता हुआ नहीं देख सकते थे। ऐसा ही उन्होंने अपने देश के शत्रु सैनिक के साथ किया। उन्होंने उसका ऑपरेशन करके उसका जीवन बचाया। और इस प्रकार उन्होंने स्वयं को भी एक मनुष्य को मारने के अपराध से बचा लिया । यह समस्या का सबसे अच्छा सम्भव हल प्रतीत होता है । एक डॉक्टर होने के नाते पहले उन्होंने उसकी जान बचाई । फिर वह जब लगभग सामान्य हो गया तो उन्होंने (डॉ. सदाओ ने) एक देशभक्त होने के नाते उससे उनका घर छोड़ने को कहा ।

Does the story remind you of ‘Birth’ by A.J. Cronin that you read in ‘Snapshots’ last year? What are the similarities ?”
क्या यह कहानी आपको पिछले वर्ष ‘Snapshots’ पाठ्य-पुस्तक में पढ़ी A. J. Cronin की कहानी ‘Birth’ की याद दिलाती है ? दोनों कहानियों में क्या समानताएँ हैं ?
Ans.
‘Birth’ and ‘The Enemy’ – both these stories bring to light the dilemma of a doctor’s mind. In ‘Birth’ the doctor is faced with the problem whether to save the mother or the child at the time of childbirth. He first saves the mother and then tries to save the child.
In ‘The Enemy’ the doctor has to decide whether to save the wounded soldier’s life or push him to the claws of death. He gives him a new lease of life. In both the stories, the doctors have to make a tough choice. In both the cases, they make the right choice.
‘Birth’ और “The Enemy’ – ये दोनों कहानियाँ एक डॉक्टर के मन की दुविधा पर प्रकाश डालती हैं। ‘Birth’ में डॉक्टर के सामने यह समस्या आती है कि वह बच्चे के जन्म के समय माँ को बचाये या बच्चे को। वह पहले माँ को बचाता है और फिर बच्चे को बचाने का प्रयास करता है।
“The Enemy’ में डॉक्टर को तय करना है कि वह घायल सिपाही को बचाये या उसे मृत्यु के पंजों की ओर धकेल दे। वह उसे एक नया जीवन देता है। दोनों कहानियों में डॉक्टर को कठिन चुनाव करना पड़ता है । दोनों मामलों में वे सही चुनाव करते हैं ।

Is there any film you have seen or novel you have read with a similar theme?
क्या आपने इस कहानी से मिलते-जुलते विषय पर कोई फिल्म देखी है या कोई उपन्यास पढ़ा है ?
Answer:
The story of the Vietnamese film ‘The White Man’ is exactly similar to this story. Vietnam was at war with America. Dr Ho Chi and his wife Min Chi find a U.S. Navy soldier washed away by sea. First, they think of throwing the man back into the sea. But being a doctor, Ho Chi operates upon him and saves his life. In the same way, in the story ‘The Enemy’, Dr Sadao saves the life of his enemy and then makes him escape to freedom.
वियतनाम की फिल्म ‘The White Man’ की कहानी बिल्कुल इस कहानी जैसी है। वियतनाम और अमेरिका के बीच युद्ध चल रहा था। डॉ. हो ची और उनकी पत्नी मिन ची को समुद्र में बहकर आया हुआ एक अमेरिकी नौसेना का सिपाही मिलता है । पहले वे सोचते हैं कि उस आदमी को वापस समुद्र में डाल दिया जाये। लेकिन एक डॉक्टर होने के नाते, हो ची उसका ऑपरेशन करके उसका जीवन बचा लेते हैं। इसी प्रकार कहानी “The Enemy’ में डॉ. सदाओ अपने दुश्मन की जान बचाता है फिर उसे भगाकर स्वतंत्र कर देता है ।

Dr Sadao was a famous doctor in Japan. He had studied surgery and medicine in America. His house was built on’a spot of the Japanese coast. It was set upon a narrow beach that was outlined with bent pines.
डॉ. सदाओ जापान के एक प्रसिद्ध डॉक्टर थे। उन्होंने अमेरिका में सर्जरी और दवाइयों का ज्ञान प्राप्त किया था। उनका घर जापान में समुद्र के किनारे एक स्थान पर था । उनका घर
एक संकरे किनारे पर स्थित था जिसके किनारे-किनारे झुके हुए चीड़ के पेड़ थे ।
Question 2.
Will Dr Sadao be arrested on the charge of harbouring an enemy? (Pages 27, 39)
क्या डॉ. सदाओ को एक शत्रु को शरण देने के आरोप में गिरफ्तार कर लिया जायेगा ?
Answer:
No, Dr Sadao will not be arrested on the charge of harbouring an enemy. His servants will not disclose the matter to anyone. Dr Sadao will tell everything to the General but the General will become careless. Thus, Sadao will remain safe.
नहीं, डॉ. सदाओ को एक शत्रु को शरण देने के आरोप में गिरफ्तार नहीं किया जायेगा । उनके नौकर यह बात किसी को नहीं बतायेंगे। डॉ. सदाओ जनरल को सब कुछ बता देंगे लेकिन जनरल लापरवाही बरतेगा। इस प्रकार, डॉ. सदाओ सुरक्षित रहेंगे।
Question 3.
Will Hana help the wounded man and wash him herself? (Page 31)
क्या हाना घायल व्यक्ति की सहायता करेगी और स्वयं उसे साफ करेगी ?
Answer:
At first, Hana will hesitate to help the wounded man as he belongs to their enemy country. But her humanity will force her to be kind. When her maid servant denies to wash the man, Hana herself will wash him.
पहले तो हाना घायल व्यक्ति की सहायता करने में संकोच करेगी क्योंकि वह उनके शत्रु देश का है । लेकिन उसकी मानवता उसे दयालु बनने को बाध्य कर देगी। अपनी नौकरानी के उस आदमी को साफ करने से मना कर देने पर वह स्वयं उसे साफ करेगी ।
Question 4.
What will Dr Sadao and his wife do with the man ? (Page 35)
डॉ. सदाओ और उनकी पत्नी उस आदमी के साथ क्या करेंगे ?
Answer:
After operating upon the man successfully, Dr Sadao will take proper care of him. He will do regular checkups of his health. His wife will feed him with her own hands. In short, they both will behave very kindly with him.
उस आदमी का सफलतापूर्वक ऑपरेशन करने के बाद डॉ. सदाओ उसकी उचित देखभाल करेंगे। वह उसके स्वास्थ्य की नियमित जाँचें करेंगे । उनकी पत्नी उसे अपने हाथों से भोजन करायेगी। संक्षेप में, वे दोनों उसके साथ बहुत दयालुतापूर्वक व्यवहार करेंगे ।
Question 5.
What will Dr Sadao do to get rid of the man ? (Page 43)
उस आदमी से छुटकारा पाने के लिए डॉ. सदाओ क्या करेंगे ?
Answer:
Dr Sadao will give him a boat with enough food and clothes in it. He will instruct him to reach a nearby island. From there, he will be able to take a Korean boat and escape to fireedom. Thus Dr Sadao will get rid of him.
डॉ. सदाओ उसे एक नाव देंगे जिसमें पर्याप्त भोजन व कपड़े होंगे । वह उसे पास ही स्थित एक द्वीप पर पहुँचने का निर्देश देंगे । वहाँ से वह कोरिया की किसी नाव पर सवार होकर स्वतंत्र बच निकलेगा । इस प्रकार डॉ. सदाओ उससे छुटकारा पा लेंगे ।
