Derry has an acid burnt face. He hates people staring at him and therefore avoids their company. He suffers from a kind of inferiority complex. Mr Lamb himself is handicapped in one leg. But he seems to have no inferiority complex. Instead, he loves meeting people. Mr Lamb’s personality is an example for him to live life without feeling ashamed of himself. All this draws Derry to Mr Lamb. He seems to be loving his company.

In the end of scene one, Mr Lamb talks to himself. Though Derry has promised to come back, he is sure he will never come back again. He says that people never come back to him. He tries to overcome his feelings of loneliness and disappointment by keeping himself busy.
He enjoys listening to the song of bees. He makes toffees with their honey. He gives toffees to the children. He gives them apples and pears too so that they may come to him again and again. He doesn’t mind being called ‘Lamey-Lamb’ by the kids in the street. He1395 is very talkative. He loves talking to people. Thus, he tries to remain cheerful in his loneliness.

Answer:
It is true that physical impairment causes physical pain. But what’s more painful is the behaviour of others. Some laugh at such persons while some others show. too much sympathy. In both the cases, the person feels offended. Derry is suffering from inferiority complex because of people’s strange behaviour towards him. People show hatred to see his burnt face. Such a person expects a normal behaviour.

Derry suffers from inferiority complex due to his burnt face. Therefore, he avoids company.
But Mr Lamb motivates him to live a normal life like all others. By his own example, he encourages him to meet people, and enjoy their company. I think, this brief association with Mr Lamb will make Derry live a normal life in future. He will come out of his seclusion. Now, his future life will be full of confidence.

Now he does not feel ashamed of himself and mingles with them. Seeing his normal behaviour, other children enjoy his company. They all talk to him. They play many games together. Mr Lamb feels pleased to see that Derry has got rid of his inferiority complex.

In my view, his family is very much responsible for this. They do not treat him as a normal boy. They are too protective in this matter. They show too much sympathy with him. They make him feel he will never be able to lead a normal life. Thus, they do not let him develop self-confidence. They make him feel that he totally depends on them.

Mr Lamb tells Derry the story of a man who was always afraid of going out. At every step, he feared from getting hurt. A bus might run over him, or a man might breathe deadly germs onto him, or a donkey might kick him to death. So he locked himself in his room and stayed in his bed. There a picture fell from the wall upon his head and killed him. He tells this story to Derry to teach him that staying alone cannot solve any problem.

He started meeting people and talking to them. He came out of his seclusion. Derry began to like the company of Mr Lamb. Thus, Mr Lamb brought a positive change in Derry’s attitude towards life.

The play gives the message that due respect should be given to the physically impaired people. We should treat them as normal persons and help them keep their self respect. The physically impaired persons should also not foster inferiority complex. They should think themselves as normal members of the society.

The actual pain and inconvenience caused by the disabilities is often much less than the sense of alienation felt by the disabled person. Derry and Mr Lamb’s physical disabilities caused pain and suffering not only to their bodies, but also to their minds and souls.

Derry was a boy of fourteen. He was a pessimist. He had lost all self-regard and led an isolated existence.He felt himself unwanted because of his acid burnt face. Mr Lamb had a tin leg yet he was satisfied with his life was full of life. He was an idol of optimism, enthusiasm and hope. There is a striking contrast between Derry and Mr Lamb.
