Textbook Questions and Answers

Think about it

Question 1.
Bill Bryson says, “I am, in short, easily confused.” What examples has he given to justify this ?
Answer:
Bill Bryson gives a few examples to justify this above statement. They are as follows:
(1) Many a time Bryson goes looking for the lavatory in a cinema. But in the end he finds himself in an alley. And he is there on the wrong side of a self-locking door.
(2) Sometimes he stays at a hotel. He has to go two or three times a day to the hotel desk because he forgets his room number.

Question 2.
What happens when the zip on his carry-on bag gives way ?
Answer:
Everything in the bag speedily comes out. It includes newspaper cuttings, other loose papers, a 14 ounce tin of pipe tobacco, magazines, passport, English money and a film roll. The lid of the tobacco tin comes off. The tobacco spreads all over the place. Then the author finds that he has cut his finger while pulling at the zip. Blood flows freely from his wound.

Question 3.
Why is his finger bleeding ? What is his wife’s reaction ?
Answer:
The zip of author’s carry-on bag jammed. He tries to open it forcibly and gets a cut in his finger. So blood begins to flow from the wounds. His wife looks at him in wonder. She says, “I can’t believe you do this for a living.”

Question 4.
How does Bill Bryson end up in a ‘crash position’ in the aircraft ?
Answer:
Once while sitting in an aircraft Bryson leans over to tie a shoelace. Just then someone in the seat ahead of him throws his seat back into full recline. Bryson is pinned helplessly in the crash position.

Question 5.
Why are his teeth and gums navy blue ?
Answer:
Once Bryson was writing down his thoughts in a notebook. He started sucking at the end of his pen. The pen leaked and gave him navy blue teeth and gums.

Question 6.
Bill Bryson ‘ached to be suave’. Is he successful in his mission ? List his ‘unsuave’ ways.
Answer:
No, Bryson was not successful in his mission to be suave. Some of his unsuave ways are as follows :
(1) He could never rise from a dinner table without creating a seismic event there.
(2) He would get into a car and close the door. Then he would find that a part of his coat was outside.
(3) He would spoil his light-coloured trousers by sitting on such things as chewing gum, icecream, cough syrup and motor oil.

Question 7.
Why do you think Bill Bryson’s wife says to the children, “Take the lids off the food for Daddy”? .
Answer:
Bill Bryson’s wife knows that her husband remains confused. He makes a mess in whatever he does. While taking the lids off the food, he could spill something and spoil someone’s clothes. That is why she asks the children to take the lids off the food for Daddy.

Question 8.
What is the significance of the title ?
Answer:
The title of this story is very significant. The tourist in this story is a frequent traveller. Something unexpected keeps happening to him always. He gets easily confused. He makes a mess in whatever he does. He locks himself in an alley while looking for a lavatory in a cinema.

He forgets the number of his hotel room and has to ask for it two or three times a day. He spoils the clothes of other passengers while handling a soft drink. He cuts his finger while pulling at a jammed zip. That is why he has been called “The Accidental Tourist.

Talk About It:

Q. To get confused and behave in ‘unsuave’ ways like Bill Bryson is normal and human. Tell your class about any similar situation that you found yourself in.
Answer:
We are human beings, and mishaps in life are common. But we must learn a lesson from every mishap. One day, I was leaving for Udaipur. I did packing of my bag. Then, suddenly I remembered my tooth brush. I unpacked the bag still it was missing. At last, I found it is my shoe. Thus, we get confused sometime. And it is normal and human.

Important Questions and Answers

I. Short Answer Type Questions :

Question 1.

‘The Accidental Tourist’
Answer:
The author of “The Accidental Tourist’ is constantly filled with wonder to see how people can do everything without any difficulty. He himself cannot do the same. He is always confused and fails to do anything properly.

Answer:
When he travels alone, he neither eats nor drinks. He never leans to tie up his shoelace. He never puts a pen near his mouth. He sits quietly and sometimes on his hands to avoid unexpected mischief.

Question 4.
What does the author compare his arm with and why ?
Answer:
He compares his arm with a cheap prop that was used in 1950s horror films. His arm has acted as an undead limb and swept the drink from its perch onto the lady’s lap sitting by him.

Question 5.
How many miles did the author travel in a year and how many air miles did he accumulate ?
Answer:
The author had travelled 1,00,000 miles in a year. He accumulated only 212 air miles divided between twenty-three airlines.

Question 6.
What did the check-in clerk inform the author on his flight to Australia?
Answer:
She informed him that he was not entitled to his air miles. There was difference in the names on the card and the ticket–on the card it was W. Bryson whereas the ticket was in the name of B. Bryson.

II. Long Answer Type Questions :

Question 1.
What was the author’s worst experience on a plane flight ?
Answer:
The author had the worst experience on a plane flight. Once on a plane flight . he was writing important thoughts in a notebook. He started sucking end of his pen. Just then he fell into conversation with an attractive young lady sitting in the next seat. It lasted for 20 minutes. Then he went into the lavatory and discovered that his mouth, chin, tongue, teeth and gums became navy blue as the pen was leaking.

Question 2.
Why does the author never get his ‘frequent flyer miles’ ?
Answer:
The author either himself forgets to get them recorded in his card or the check in clerks forget to record them or the check-in clerk informs him that he is not entitled to them. Once on a flight to Australia he was going to get about a zillion air miles, the checkin clerk told him that he was not entitled to any because the ticket was in the name of B. Bryson and the card was in the name of W. Bryson. So he could never collect enough milage that is needed for free travel.
